Takeuchi TB260 final drive failure. Advice on new one?

I had a final drive go out all of a sudden on my TB260. No signs of prior oil leaking out, and only 2000 hours on the machine. Gear oil and metal shavings leaked out on the back of the unit and seized up.

I got a price from the dealer on an OEM final drive for $3250 plus tax. The other option is an eBay unit for about $2400 from Presicion Final Drive. They seem to have good feedback. Would you guys go for the Takeuchi one, or aftermarket and save money?

When I took the hoses off the final drive, we saw what looked like very fine brass particles in the hydraulic oil, So Ill probably do a fluid change there.

Are they both remanufactured or are they both new units? Either way I would look at warranty differences and see if that sways you either way. I would need a reason to play more money for the Taki drive unit.

Both new, not reman. The eBay ones have a limited lifetime warranty. I'd have to find out about the Tak one. Leaning toward getting the lesser expensive one at the moment. They claim the OEM ones often come out of the same factory.

If you can believe in the company behind the warranty, pretty hard to beat a lifetime warranty. Hopefully the trash in the hyd oil doesn't cause other issues. I have never heard of drive failure issues on Taki's before, I am curious why that happened at 2k hours?

The shop I talked to said that the fluid (gear oil) is know to leak out of a seal on the back of the drive and go unoticed. But I’m 99% sure that wasn’t the case with mine… I would have seen oil on the track I believe.

They did say the filter is good at catching the debris.. let’s hope.

I think the book said to use aw32 or aw46 for hydraulic oil… I’m in NY state so it sees warm and cold operation. I see someone else on here uses T0-4 10w drivetrain oil. Not sure what will be the best.

I'm that someone. 10W TO4 in all my Takeuchi machine hydraulic systems, all 7 of them. A few are at or over 10k hours, and the only pumps I've ever changed were the gear pumps on my TL150 machines. They fractured the mounting ears over time.

The final drive gear box needs changed at a maximum of 1000hrs, MAXIMUM. I average between 300 & 600 hours on my excavators. The gear side gets 90W oil.

The gear boxes don't just up and self destruct. The floating seal is easily damaged if left in water or really soupy mud during freeze-thaw cycles. Then the floating seal fractures, allowing oil loss.

You mention that the machine has 2k hours. How many hours on the gearbox oil?

I would say not even 200 hours on the gear oil in the drives. the only thing I can think of is this past winter there was some mud that froze in the track frame and may have stressed the drive when trying to break free from that.

It's not the stress on the drive that is the issue, it is the frozen mud jacking up the seal on the backside of the final, which then lets the oil leak out. You won't necessarily see the oil with all the dirt and mud in there.

That could very well be. However when I did notice the failure, there was a lot of gear oil and metal shavings pouring out that made a pretty good sized puddle. So I don't think it was totally dry.

Try conequipment.com I’ve bought final drives from them for John deer skid steers and haven’t had problems with them.
