1986 Case 580 frustrating no start/no power to gauges

It’s fixed! Thank you to all that chimed in. I initially hit the ground bolts with a wire brush and made sure they were secure (but never removed as there was little/no signs of corrosion). Because of my inexperience using a multimeter I was able to get continuity by placing my probe where the...

1986 Case 580 frustrating no start/no power to gauges

That was voltage at the starter. The voltage at battery is 12.5 does not drop while turning key. Engine turns easily by hand

1986 Case 580 frustrating no start/no power to gauges

Voltage dropped from 11 to 8.4 while turning ignition on - it didn’t even try to crank. Neutral safety switch is fine I jumpered the connection and nothing changed. Tried jumping the starter from main lug to ignition and it just clicked. Installed new starter and tried jumping same way and...

    1986 Case 580 running hot

Checked the temp at manifold at 2200rpm with a water gauge temp that is reading just in the red: cyl 1 - 320 cyl 2 - 350 cyl 3 - 370 cyl 4 - 360 The temp fluctuates quite a bit depending on if machine was just idling (temps in like lower - mid 200's) or right after working it hard where cyl 3...

    1986 Case 580 running hot

New tstat and new water pump same reading on the temp gauge - both the tstat and pump I replaced looked perfectly fine. No corrosion in tstat housing and it passed the boiling water test. Water pump freely spun and also had no corrosion build up on it. When I replaced water pump, nice fresh...

    1986 Case 580 running hot

That's kind of my hang up - i'm not sure what temp it's actually operating at. I figured the top of the radiator would be hottest (if everything flowing correctly) but at 153 its still a ways off from opening the tstat. I could zip everything back together and check the temp at the sensor...

    1986 Case 580 running hot

Thank you for info -- I tested the thermostat in a pot of boiling water seems to open fine, I flushed radiator with hose and it was pretty clean fluid no rust/contaminants. I'll throw a new water pump at it and check the connections for the sensor

    1986 Case 580 running hot

I picked this Case 580 super E with the 4-390 non turbo Cummins - it's been a great machine and with the help of this forum I've been able to repack almost all the cylinders as they've been slowly leaking. My water temp gauge had never worked since I bought it last fall. While repacking the...

I'm a big fan of the "if it's stupid but it works, it ain't that stupid theory" especially in situations like this haha

Case 580 frustrating hydraulic line removal

This pic gives a better indication of where the fitting is located and the issues of getting any sort of leverage on nut with wrenches or sockets. These are two 12" extensions - anything shallower hits the oil pan, anything longer hits the skid or the angle is too much to get any significant...

Case 580 frustrating hydraulic line removal

I blew the return(?) line from the pump on my 1986 case 580 super e this past weekend. I was able to remove the end from the pump easily enough but for the life of me can’t remove the other end of the soft line which is wedged between frame rail and engine block. It’s mainly a matter of...

1986 Case 580e boom cylinder seal

Hi all- with the help of this forum I tackled the job of replacing a badly leaking book cyl on my new to me case 580e. I purchased the seal kit from HW part store using the stamped number on the cylinder nut. Everything went together fine until the last seal the “wiper” or whatever it is called...
