    F350 with "Death Wobble"

For the life of me, I can't remember where I read this, or what truck it was a problem with, but ovalled out holes where suspension components bolt or rivet to the frame can cause death wobble. Not something that you would think to check, because it should never be loose or worn out, as it...

Where is the hardest Asphalt that you have milled?

River rock can be very hard on teeth. I think it is because the hardest stuff remains after the river rolls the rest around. The granite and other hard stuff is left over.

    dumbest mistakes

Thanks for sharing, milling drum. The truth will set you free! One of these days I might share my best screw up. It's been years, but I'm still not too keen on telling the tale.

    Asphalt Ziper Good or Bad

Ok. Gotcha. The "zipper" may be something to look at. I don't know much about them in particular, but have done work for a municipality that owns one. (I run a milling crew for a paving company.) We have 2' skid mills,4', and half lane machines. I would also reccomend you look at the CAT...

    Asphalt Ziper Good or Bad

Deeretime, if you have skidloaders, look for an attachment that cuts a slot. We call it a slot cutter, or pizza cutter. The wheel is 2 feet in dia. or so, and will cut a slot in asphalt about 4" wide and max depth of about 10". This uses standard replaceable milling machine teeth, and works...

    pictures to share #2

I guess I'm spoiled. I have two ground men and a truck watcher. We do mostly residential streets/township roads, and ALOT of profiling/grade correcting, where you can't just set it and forget it. Both guys are often dialing grade adjustments at the same time. If I had a guy capable of...

    Lets see your Teeth

I agree that material you are cutting has the biggest effect on wear.( Captain obvious statement right there :D) Some of the worst asphalt I've come up against was made with river gravel. Have burned up a set of W-7's in half a day, and had to change the whole drum. We can do it in 20...

    Reclamation

From what little I've been around, it does'nt look like fun. We had some residential streets to do, with all the usual manholes and valves, a few yrs back. Not good. I was not directly involved, but spoke to a few residents on the street. Rather unhappy customers.

W-7's here. W-1's in the 2' skid loader mill. Curious what others use as well.

    Oversize load

Nac, it was in Butler Pa. The truck said New Jersey's finest on the side, but I missed the name. I was headin home, and just snapped a few shots while I was doing some paperwork.

    Oversize load

The turn he is making puts him on the street I just milled. This will be a record for the heaviest proof roll ever for me! I'd love to know what the actual axle weights are. I kept thinking he needed the crab steer option. It may have kept him from having to back up so much. I didn't...

turning Here he is making a turn. The rear steers like a snake, the front half goes one way and the rear the other. On my Roadtec, they call it coordinated steering.

    Oversize load

This big rig drove thru my job today. I was done milling and parking equip. by the time he got there. He was stuck making a turn for a bit. Problems with hyd. steering in the back I was told. I heard everything from 500,000 to 900,000 lbs and that it was 200' long. I think some...

    Welding dipper and boom

A pic of the crack may get you some more specific advice... Drilling the ends is a very good suggestion, make sure you find the actual end. Doing it "out of position" is strictly a matter of your skill level. If you are unsure of your ability, it may be worth the effort to take it...

    Welding dipper and boom

Orville, I gotta agree with adam, and I'll add this: Get a fresh can of 7018. For critical welds old opened 7018 will have absorbed moisture from the air, and will be harder to light, and possibly more prone to cracking when you are done. Prep is 90% of good welding. Nice shiny gaps to fill, and...

    wedge curb mill??

Our guys still use a big heavy hand roller on the curbs. That concrete curb and gutter usually shows a shadow and crack at the edge of it, but i've plowed into the crete plenty of times before I figured it was underneath. Whacked a couple buried water boxes yesterday. I'll take them all...

    wedge curb mill??

bean, thanks for the suggestion. We have a wirtgen (1200F I think) that has interchangeable drums... Maybe this winter I could fab something... you definitely have my wheels turning. Ultimately, the best solution would still be a machine that could reference the cartway cut to provide...

    wedge curb mill??

Sure is easier, but that's alot of material in curb. This job had about 3 miles of 24" curb. I'm not the numbers guy, but was told it is cheaper for the township.:beatsme
