    Maintenance: Tricks of the trade

I don't actually sweat much at all - with the exception of when I have rubber gloves on my hands and it's hot out. They're just basically a sealed bag if they fit snug, and the sweat can't escape. And I generally don't find any that don't fit snug either. Size XXL gloves.

    Maintenance: Tricks of the trade

The regular rubber or vinyl gloves make my hands sweat like crazy too. Try "flocked" lining rubber gloves. They help a lot. But I still only wear them if I'm working with really nasty chemicals, which is hardly ever.

New Holland 555E Backhoe Boom Lock Slack

Yeah, same here. I always let the boom down to take up the slack. A little pressure only if needed.

    What's your hoe doing?

I have had a few leaners near the house. I like to climb up with some spikes and remove all the branches on the side I want it to fall away from, then cut it down. Has worked very well for me so far.

    What's your hoe doing?

Y'all ever see one of these FLIR cams? Fun little buggers.

    What's your hoe doing?

It has a built-in ratchet to catch and hold it. You pretty much *have* to be careful of it by design on this one. Apparently Enerpac bought this design from Sweeney (or maybe bought Sweeney itself) and produces the same model with their name on it now. Several other companies including Williams...

    What's your hoe doing?

Gonna have to change my hoe's rear tires at some point before too long, they're getting awfully cracked. Picked up a new helper for when the time comes. Facebook Market sure comes in handy now and again.

    Where’s Tinkerer?

After so many decades on the internet, I've learned to do that too. Probably the best thing you could have done. Knee-jerk reactions never go well...

    Where’s Tinkerer?

It's very true that it's really easy to misinterpret the written word, but it's good to learn to ignore the jag-offs anyway. That's par for the course almost everywhere on the Internet. I am a moderator at a large machinist message board. Some of those fellers can get downright mean. And for...

    What's your hoe doing?

Lost an old 70' pine in our recent several days of heavy winds. It uprooted and fell into another stand of trees, getting stuck at about a 45° lean angle. The old hoe helped straighten that out. Had to cut some of the roots with a Sawzall to get it loose though, it was taking the tail end of the...

    What's your hoe doing?

I didn't need it to loosen bolts. Just to push out the rod end from the tapered fit.

    What's your hoe doing?

Literally just did that myself, last fall right before the weather got nasty. On a 555D mine came off pretty easy though. I did cheat and use a tiny Enerpac jack and hand pump to pop out the tapered fits after loosening the nuts.

    What's your hoe doing?

Almost bought one of those myself. But then I ended up with the 555D.

    What's your hoe doing?

Well, if the garage falls over, at least you will probably still be able to use the lean-to.

    NH 555E gland nut wrench

    Me too. Even worse!

    NH 555E gland nut wrench

I'm sure, but the idea of undersized pins just irks me, as a 30+ year machinist... Us crusty old, picky machinists cringe at even the thought of an egged out pin hole.

    NH 555E gland nut wrench

I'm half tempted to make a few sets of various sizes for a few bucks.

    NH 555E gland nut wrench

I have the OTC tool too. I just turned a bunch of custom pins in the lathe for different sized cylinders. Guessing stepped pins can be bought from somewhere like McMaster-Carr.

    What's your hoe doing?

May be time for a seal job then. Mine's also due on both the boom and the dipper. I'd do a leakage test.

    What's your hoe doing?

What machine is that?! Mine was a simple test of *maximum* upward force, using any and all functions. I've never heard of a backhoe that could pick up that much weight using the backhoe for crane/lift. This sounds normal to me other than the drift. Did that happen even with hands off the...
