    The 1/2" seems to be a killer and I'm leery of restricting flow before the lift pump. I like the idea of the spin down filter you posted. I can buy replacement filters for less than $3 and maybe save some of those $16 inline cans. I'll see if I can work up a mounting arrangement tomorrow.
