The JLG 40F Boom Lift Dilemma

It's a little complicated as mine was stripped down and just used as a crane to set trusses so the wiring was all removed and what I got was a pile of controls and wire. I am slowly rewiring it. I redid the engine wiring and that works great, even the automatic throttle. There are two...

The JLG 40F Boom Lift Dilemma

I pulled mine off and it's pretty clean, I poured some fluid though it and I don't think that's my problem as it flows through about as fast as I can pour. I ordered one anyways as it doesn't hurt to replace it after all these years. Next I am thinking maybe the relief valve is stuck or...

The JLG 40F Boom Lift Dilemma

Off, thanks. I really enjoy working on this older stuff and making the parts I need. I assume that JLG would have this filter, here's a lousy picture, I'll get a better one once I get it cleaned off. I sprayed it with some dawn detergent and will wash it off in the am. I was hoping to...

The JLG 40F Boom Lift Dilemma

Since this seems to be "The Thread" for JLG lift questions... I have a 60FR from 1977 with the Ford Engine. It's been "fixed up" over the years and I am trying to get it workable. The main cylinder leaked so bad it would take 5 gallons to lift it. I pulled the boom off and rebuilt the...

    What's this Detroit Diesel?

I know one of you will just take one glance and tell me. I've dug around a little bit and it's supposed to have an 8 digit serial number, but this doesn't. It runs simply amazing, starts right up and will spin the tires w/o any effort at all. so what is it? And no, it's never for sale as...

    deere 410D Front Spindle Bushings

No, I made a spindle bearing installer tool (the remover with a hole in it for some ACME threaded rod) and a spindle installer with a threaded rod with 5/8 thread on one end to screw into the spindle. That sledge hammer in the background is just there as a threat in case it decides not to...

    deere 410D Front Spindle Bushings

How tight should the new spindles be? I ordered a couple and with the new bearings, its a real effort to get the spindles in. I don't think I need to ream the new bushings to size, but I am not sure.

    deere 410D Front Spindle Bushings

Just in case anyone cares :), I made a driver and it pushed the old bushings out easy peazy....

    deere 410D Front Spindle Bushings

That only works for one of them, cannot really start in the middle. :) Wasn't that hard to chisel the top one out ok.

    deere 410D Front Spindle Bushings

Any tricks to getting the spindle bushings out. The ones in there now are worn paper thin on one side. I've resorted to just using a chisel and getting the top one out bit by bit, and I can make a press on the lathe and get the bottom one after the top is out of the way. Any hints appreciated.

CAT 304.5 - Will not shut off - Bad alternator?

What's actually going on is that the connection for the alternator (not the power connector, but the two little wires) has cracked with age and the two wires were touching. When that happens, it somehow allows enough power to flow back that the main relay stays powered with the key off. Now...

CAT 304.5 - Will not shut off - Bad alternator?

I have a CAT 304.5 with a odd problem. Sometimes it will not shut off. I've tried disconnecting every relay, the ignition switch, just about every other thing I could find. At first I had to stop it by pulling wire to the fuel shutoff, then I figured out the circuit breaker to the console...

    CAT 304.5 Boom Bushings replacement

Is it a major undertaking to replace the pins and bushing for the boom on a 304.5? I don't have a manual (but if this is covered I can get one) and although I have worked on lots of other equipment and have a pretty complete shop, but this is my first excavator. Just looking for some advice.
