Hoarding isn't always a bad thing

Had a truck with a C-15 come in day before yesterday pushing coolant out under a hard pull, got the head off and the head gasket was going in two places. Got a gasket kit this morning and sled gauged the liners, they were consistent at +.003... not enough for a 525HP engine. Oh, look... I saved...

    RTO 15715 doing wierd stuff

A month back I put a rebuilt 15715 in a truck, 1400 miles later it seems like it wants to float the range clutch into neutral when its cruising easy, no problem with a hard pull, or with the jake on hard. just easy floating. The regulator is only putting out 47PSI, would that be the cause...

    Some people get lucky

Got to the shop this morning and there's a truck sitting outside the door, note on the shop door says "loss of boost". So I pull it in and start checking boots on the air to air lines. This is an '06 Pete with a C-15 MXS "double trouble" twin turbo setup. Oh, the wastegate arm on the high...

    Ductile Iron parts

On another forum (Welding) I keep hearing guys say that Case ductile iron, the parts labeled "DO NOT WELD" can be repaired. I have never tried it over liability concerns... Is it possible? Local Case service manager says "No". I feel he's being honest with me and I just replace the stuff. I have...

    The Energizer Bunny

This old girl just rolled 1.6 million miles. I've been the care taker since 2006. See it about twice a month for PM, last week we did all 4 rear brakes and hubs. New camshafts, bushings, slacks, the full meal deal. Amazing that for a 1996 it's still a primary tractor on the road everyday.

    Lovin' the DOT

The DOT guys have been on a bit of a rampage locally, I'm up to my ears in brake jobs, wheel seals, and wiring issues. Getting a bunch of PM work too, (fix it before they catch me). so much for the off-season slowdown.

What is it with horsepower ratings?

There's a guy on another site I watch that thinks he needs 350 HP to move a 65K Lb. drilling rig around. It's come up before and I got shouted down because I suggested he replace his 3208 with a smaller rated 6V92 (done it) The "Experts" told him 350HP was the magic number. How many 5 axle...

Big Cam Cummins high oil pressure

Got a '94 BC 400 with STC dropped in my lap running like crap, pulled the valve covers and all three of the STC internal manifolds had at least one tube "blown out" of the injector adaptor. When you start the engine cold it pumps about 100 psi at 1000 rpm for 7-8 minutes and drops to normal as...

    '03 F-350 with 6.0 engine

I've been looking for a new work truck to replace my tired old '98 Chevy K3500 6.5 diesel. It's been a great truck, but 220K is starting to show it's age. Found an '03 F350 4x4 with only 108K on it, truck looks good but I hear good and bad about the 6.0 engine... Opinions? Honest experience...

Converting a New Holland Combine for Dry beans

I've got a customer with a late mode New Holland twin rotor machine that want's to add a dip n pour clean grain elevator and a "tubeveyor" tank discharge to handle dry beans with out cracking. Anybody done one of these? Are kits available? I did a 1680 IH way back in the early 90's and it was a...

    Ford V-10 life estimate

Been looking at an '02 F350 with a V10 as a rec vehicle, maybe 10k miles a year pulling camp trailer or boat. Clean rig from a local county road department, good maintenance and light use. But it has 160,000 miles and I'm curious to know how long these can go without problems. I had a '99 V10...

    D-5H Torque convertor question

A customer has a D-5H and is complaining of weak pushing, He has a service manual on the way. Just thought I'd get some barnstorming ideas til it gets here. Charge valve or something along that line? Obviously the first thing I will do is check the suction screen and filter and go from there.

    3408 in D9N

I have an outfit with a 9N that wants me to replace their engine, It has a rod sticking out of the block... Knocked the starter right off. Now is where it gets interesting, 7 years ago they inframed this engine and it lived about 30 hours, It spun 2 rods and 1 main. After that fix,(crank ground...
