    Cat 953 locking fuel cap

Yes, under the main cap, it looks like there is a venting mechanism.

    Cat 953 idler replacement

I am curious, what is the right tool for a situation like this? The threads in the pin don't seem to have enough pulling force and the pin is not accessible from the backside. I had the housing red hot but no go when pulling (multiple attempts). The threads were re-tapped but were starting to...

    Cat 953 idler replacement

Ha, those yoke pins were rusted solid. I used a lot of oxy/acetylene and impact work before deciding to cut the ears off the old idler arms. I'm going to use my hydraulic press to get them the rest of the way out. I believe those were the original 1980s pins. Much respect for you guys that...

    Cat 953 idler replacement

Does anyone have the instructions to replace a front idler group on a 953 77y? The assembly I received has the idler wheel with the arms attached. So far I have the track split and unbolted the pin that connects to the yoke assembly. It looks like I will need to use a 1/2" bolt and a large...

    Track splitting tips?

I ended up heating the alligator link, then quickly dosing the bolt head with water. The bolt shrinkage and hot link was just enough to get all of them out.

    Track splitting tips?

I need to split the track on my 953 and would appreciate any tips on getting the gator type link apart. The bolts are rounded of course. I tried one by heating it up with the acet. torch and driving a 22 mm socket on it. No go with the impact yet, and I dont want to snap it off. Thanks

    Cat 953 track pad width

Yeah, I'm thinking that is the most likely scenario. I looked again this weekend and just couldn't imagine someone cutting down a full 20" track. Meanwhile, my front idler bearing went out, so it looks like a track split is in order.

    Cat 953 track pad width

So, I assume the original pad width was 15" and someone took 20" pads and cut them down to fit. That would be a lot of cutting.

    Cat 953 track pad width

Not a great pic, my serial is below 77Y1395. Re-reading your post, I'm wondering if someone cut down the inner part of a 20" track.

    Cat 953 track pad width

I'm thinking of putting new pads or a full track assembly on my Cat 953 (early 77y serial). The standard width listed seems to be 15 or 20". I measured my pads and they are roughly 17.5" wide. Am I measuring the wrong dimension or is it an oddball track? Thanks

    Case 580d Fuel in Oil

Thanks. I didn't get it up to operating temp before noticing the oil/diesel overflow but the exhaust port on #1 was certainly cooler than the others.

    Case 580d Fuel in Oil

I have a new to me 580d with the 207 engine. It ran a little rough when I got it, so I replaced injectors and filters. When I first checked the oil, the level was good and it looked clean. After replacing filters and injectors, I ran it for a bit and it still ran rough, so the plan this...

    Cat 953 locking fuel cap

I figured it out. There was a broken plastic ring inside the cap. I ground off the top rivets which allows access to the metal part of cap. A bit of heat and a punch got it off.

    Cat 953 locking fuel cap

I have an early 953 (77y serial) and the fuel tank has been rusting up and clogging filters. I found a 953b plastic tank with a different style cap and I cant seem to get it off. The part looks like a Cat 5G3612. Whats the trick on these locking caps? Thanks

    CAT 953 Grease points

Here is a video I took over the weekend. Does this sound like an idler squeak?

    CAT 953 Grease points

I checked and mine doesn't have the lower grease fittings, will work on adding those. There are no rocks that I can see in the idler. Is there a bearing that can be replaced on it?

    CAT 953 Grease points

I haven't made it back down to the farm to check the 953 for those hidden grease zerks, but I was digging through the avspare parts diagrams and they don't show the zerks on my model (though it does show up on the later series). https://avspare.com/caterpillar/hebp1349/hebp1349028/ I'm...

    CAT 953 Grease points

Thanks, I pin pointed the squeak to the left front idler. I will work on cleaning out that hole and greasing it.
