I gave notice about starting my pension today!

It was a very long day, I pushed through to finish a job ahead of the weather. The boss was working late himself, and came out to offer a cup of coffee before i started home. It just seemed like the right time to broach the subject. The work has dried up greatly, and I have been making hours out...

retirement update; Soft Start May 1

It's an odd situation for me. Work is really slow and I go in and make some hours, but that is personally not fulfilling in the least. Pension on May 1= roughly 1.9 weeks gross pay. I can work 1.25 weeks and stay in the pension indefinitely. My medical benefits take about 128 hours of work for a...

    I found a real antique, a 1937 Cat 11 with the d6600 3 cylinder

And no pony motor. Where they have it they just pull start it with something. It's no jewel. It probably needs some rubber but the force is strong.

    Check deduction for vehicle expense

This started showing up on my pay check at the start of the year. They deduct 15 a week to cover vehicle expenses for the company vehicle, in my case a 3500 with a 12' bed and toolboxes and pipe rack. Anybody else seeing this deduction? I can't complain about the cost. I cannot drive my TDI...

New Teeth = New Pins and Rings 100%?

I'm changing out a couple of worn twin tigers on the corners. The pins drove out easy and I cleaned them up and looked at them. What say you? I do have the new hardware, and I can bag the old ones if I'm worried about having spares.

2006 GMC 3500 flickering dash and headlights

My instinct is to replace the alternator and give that a try, but I am loathe to toss parts at something. it charges the batteries OK, I put a digital voltmeter on it and they do not track fast enough to show this flicker, but the voltage tracks along as expected. No I don't have an...

steal an excavator and instant karma for one

Two guys were stealing an excavator last night with a stolen truck and trailer. I can only guess that the kingpin was on the excavator seat and told his accomplice to go go go, I will get it on the trailer and we can stop and chain it down. Accomplice drove like and idiot, trailer comes off...

    Annual Inspections

So I have that going on for me :) I dropped it off with some instructions and complaints. One of them was a dragging front brake. I just got a call that 4 out 6 of the slack adjusters were bad. Now I know that did not happen overnight, but I am glad it's getting all new slack adjusters now...

large collection in Tacoma will be sold soon, stop by and check it out before it goes

The co-owner of Williams Oil Service in Tacoma loved toy tractors and trucks, and he filled the shelf tops at the store with them for decades. He passed away this summer and his family wants to close that chapter. These are a few pictures to give an idea of the magnitude of the collection.

    Flat head 6 available

I think this could be had cheap. It was running when shut down 10 years ago and turns freely. Looks to be all there except the starter. This is the truck it came out of for identification. It will get re-powered with something modern and be a pickup in a new life. LOVE this pristine grille!

Cat C 4.4 engine in a telehandler-- Is that going to be a huge money pit?

It is listed as 'weak/bad, needs repair" I know that is a huge open ended statement, but I don't have more than that, no codes. it is a 2007, I am guessing with EGR.

The old iron, down the road

Sing it to the tune of creedence Clearwater revival. The area around the shop is semi-industrial postmodern cludge. One guy has an impressive collection of various bits and pieces. He seems to have a fondness of the 1150 Case crawler loaders, for one thing. These funky ford loaders. I don't...

replacing a farm bridge 15~16' span

They removed the rotted stuff and want to put it back It was sitting on a row of half RR ties hand dug in as pilings on a cap, and (5) 6x12 x 16' notched at the ends a bit to sit over the cap. All pinned together. My plan is to use some magnum blocks @ 15' apart as I can set those with the...

    Fat Alice and others

I picked up some grindings and the fellow has this elevator scraper for sale, along with an ancient pup. They appear to be well rooted and not going anywhere. There is an original D4 Traxcavator along the highway out there too. Those are rare to see. I'll get some pics of that. It has a push...

    Insley H-3000

We went for a hike and right by the trailhead I spotted this old Insley and had to take some pics. I found another site that had auctioned one off and listed the weight at ~114,000 pounds. It went for $10,000 in 2006. I would have guessed closer to 80,000 They probably unpinned the stick...

Leaking forklift cylinder, can I DIY this?

The old hyster at work started leaving a puddle. I pulled the wet cylinder and ran the plumber's pipe scope down it. It looked better with a flashlight from the end :( I got the snap ring and washer out of the piston assembly but no luck pulling the check valve. It may be metric threads in...

Mower Case drain location for Cat 315L

Serial number 6ym50094 My friend has a US Mower all mounted up and needs to plumb a case drain back to the tank. The local Cat shop said something about drilling the tank or some plumbing into the cap, both ideas sound bad to me. Is there a good return fitting he can Tee into safely with that...

    boom truck found

My friend who is building two cabins has stumbled on a 10 ton 57' RO on a GMC with the 8.2 it will be purchased right. We got it started and I was able to operate the crane and check it out. It needs brakes and tires, but is otherwise OK IMO. In all likelihood I will do the bulk of the...
