The hydraulic crane fell as it was lowering the Westerly Konsort on to estuary mud at the jetty of Portchester Sailing Club in Portsmouth Harbour, Hampshire.

The crane driver was shaken by the accident but otherwise unharmed although the boat was severely damaged.

Firefighters and coastguards were called in to stabilise the crane and yacht.

Pauline Musselwhite, from Portchester Sailing Club, said: "It started to fall slowly, then there was an almighty crash as it went into the boat."
