deere 328 with 5cyl engine surges

engine speed surges a couple hundred RPMs when under a load. new filter. starts fine, runs good otherwise. ive read that diesel treatment might help lubricate the fuel rack to minimize it. others have said it needs to be adjusted due to bad enginineering. engine has 9k hours.

You will need more than a manual. Special tools and a deft touch as well. The adjustment might help, but don't be surprised if you need injection pumps. Common problem with those 5 cylinder engines.

You will not want to do this yourself with no experience and the special tooling you will need. Trust me.......it sucks.

There is one possibility . . We have had several where we were able to back out the full fuel/starting magnet screw 2 turns. This does not affect the fuel setting, only moves the start aid magnet further away from the rack. This is located low on the front cover, close to the crank pulley.
Not sure what wears or moves, but as the rack moves to full load fuel, the magnet can catch and momentary snap it to full fuel. This adjustment also reduces the Rev at startup.
