My father in law cleaned up his scrap pile at the dealership this week. He said Drums/Rotors were $230/ton and shred was $175/ton. He said he hauled in almost 5,000 pounds of rotors from the last years worth of brake jobs. He's just glad his pile is gone before snow season starts.

Have a pile load of brake drums at work and the core buyer that stops by has not been by for 3 weeks now. He pays my boss good money for them due to prices, they are heavy.

That is why i started hauling . Trying to get rid of stuff was a deal . I can understand what the seller and buyer have going on . I also have several trailers so I can leave one if the seller wants to load it them selfs. I could write a very thick book on the scrap businesses . Also I cant count how many times I was called and went to get some scrap and it was a small deal wondering if I would make any money or not . I guess its all part of the scrap world .

He did come today finally,3 of his trucks were down getting fixed and paid my boss well on them. I loaded them in the back of his semi truck trailer with a loader at the shop

The end of last week I sold some clean aluminum car wheels I got .91 cents a pound. I also hauled 380 pounds of cans . I got .30 cents a pound for them. I hate messing with the cans they are a deal but its better than them going to a land fill or ditch. There is a lot of stuff not being recycled that could or should be.

It's not the wild cash I get from scrap. It's my part to keep stuff out of the landfill. The cash does help with fuel to get it to the recycling yard. I did get 45 cents per pound for the 37 pounds of AL cans.

If they really don't want it in the landfill they can pay more for the scrap. If it goes in the landfill anyway, they can always dig it out again if they want it back. Landfills are just a long term resource storage bank.

I had a good day I hauled 2 loads today . They said the price will probably be going down but I got $145.00 a ton today. I also was able to haul a car home that I bought 2 weeks ago and I went by another place and loaded up a load of building tin that I need to haul off for most of the summer. I have one more place I need to clean up its the last deal on my list besides my own stuff. I hope to start on it next week . I have been trying and hoping I don't get ask to do more clean up jobs till I get my stuff and everything caught up.

The fire cleanup is a big scam. Who knows what happens to all the junk.

I had some customers who got burned down and moved here. The cleanup contractors are paid by the state to remove all the junk and sort and dispose of hazmat properly. So far so good. Well they get paid by the ton. After the lot was all cleaned off they just kept going. Taking down a cinder block retaining wall and throwing it in the dumpster. My customer had to go in there and stop them and throw them out. Just so they could add to their tonnage.

Roofers showed up last week to replace the metal roofing that was damaged in a hail storm in April 2023 (yes, almost 2 years to settle that issue). Its a long, jumbled up story, but the guys are from out of state and had no intentions of cleaning up the site before a winter storm was supposed to hit. We did it ourselves before we had barn steel blown all over the county. I ended up hauling in 10,000 pounds of barn steel last Thursday, $180/Gross Ton (2,240 pounds). I learned something new: Local scrapyard pays a bonus on top of listed price for quality of product being delivered, and volume being delivered per load. Listed price was $150/ton. I received $20/ton for delivering over 3,000 pounds per load, and another $10/ton for the quality.

Current Prices:
Sheet Iron/Auto Bodies/Misc (Shear Grade) - $150/ton
2' Foundry - $170/ton
Rotors/Drums - $225/ton

Aluminum - $0.58-.70/pound depending on grade

Lead Batteries - $0.20/pound

#1 Copper - $2.96/pound
#2 Copper - $2.82/pound
#1 Insulated - $1.74/pound

They have more than that listed on their price sheet, but that's the gist of it.

Local scrap yard here is same. Have it clean separated and sized they give top dollar for. Ad prices are for whole autos or complete assemblies as washers dryers or odd pieces not cut down.

Its a real circus getting the best price . I separate a lot of stuff then sometimes call around but then this place that's paying more is maybe farther away. So then you have to figure is it worth it. Then should I hold on to something if the price is down ? Another deal there is a place that is very close to me. He is a deal some of my people don't like him and will not deal with me if I sell to him. He hasn't done any thing to me but he wants to haggle over prices and I have other things to do.

We have several options around here too, but I'm usually tasked to just clean up a farm related mess and just getting the scrap hauled off is of more concern than getting the best price. If optimum price was of concern, management would focus on separating our scrap a lot more as the plow points, disc, other would count towards 2' prepared and get a much better price than general misc. As of now, everything gets tossed into the bins and when they're full, they get unloaded into our dump truck, and hauled to the closest place. Radiators, copper wiring/tubing, stainless, etc. I think it's a waste, but I get no benefit from doing the extra work to sort it and management doesn't care. There were 2 stainless steel agitation props in that last load (40 pounds or so apiece) that could have brought $24 if separate. Instead, they brought about $6 as general misc.

Some days not worth the extra effort. Been there a lot last few years.

Agreed. From an employer's standpoint it's not just the labor burden to separate the scrap it's also the opportunity cost of the employee not performing their normal role.

When we demo a building everything except copper tubing goes in the metal roll off. Our guys get the copper scrap and prep it at the end of the day off the clock. Last big haul they had to the scrap yard they got around $2500 IIRC.

Everything else goes in the metal box along with any romex wiring and other misc metals.
