Here's a couple of crappy phone pics taken towards the end of a 16 hour shift out on one of the runways. We milled out a total of 4000 tons over two shifts with cuts ranging from 1" up to 9" with an average of about 4". Equipment used was 2) PM565b's - 1)PM201 - 1)RX10 - and about 50 trucks. We still have 7 or 8 phases left in this project so i will try and get some better pics with the digital camera this weekend

photos look great. One of the jobs I am involved in is we are replacing the taxiways. The contractor is using a cat 201 and a small wertgen. I would get photos but off on holidays and the planing will be over and paving stated by the time I get back.

Yes it is Aggregate, i've been an operator in the milling division for about 8 years now. I;m going to bring my digital camera with me tonight/tomorrow and will get some better pics

I'm curious about the 50 trucks--obviously whatever pavement you're working on is closed to aircraft, but the trucks have to go somewhere else. How are they coordinated with the air traffic? I imagine that at some point they need to cross an active runway or taxiway, if not in this phase, at least in one of the later ones. Or have they been able to work out some routing that keeps them off of any active pavement?

(Mrs. Digger used to be a controller there at BOS Tower.)

You are correct Digger - on this particular project the trucks are required to cross both a runway and a taxiway in order to reach the perimeter road. All vehicles must have a Massport approved escort to drive on the airside (about a month or so ago there was a close call incident involving an engineer from another project putting a halt to all airside construction for a week or so). All trucks and workers are subjected to a background check and must be badged to get through the gate and all vehicles are searched everytime they go through(sometimes creating long lines of both milling and paving trucks). Work was cancelled for last night due to a problem with the mix formula so no new pics til next week

Do you mean an escort vehicle, or somebody actually in the truck with them?
I've listened to BOS ground control on the radio, and it's hectic enough with just aircraft. I can't imagine throwing 50 trucks into the mix...

Not to mention if one of those truck drivers makes a wrong turn, but they would never do that

Hey Milling drum, i'm not sure if thats the paint line you're seeing or just a scuff mark left by the grade ski. The casting you see is an edge of runway light on this particular phase i believe there were 4 or five on each edge of the cut - as you can see these get trimmed to grade. there were also approx 35 centerline lights in a single - single - double pattern that i will go out and pre-trim around to a depth of 6" allowing the electricians to open them up and remove the risers (hopefully dropping them low enough that we can go right over them and not have to jump them).
Hey Digger, i was reffering to an escort vehicle, each escort will usually take 3 or 4 trucks with him/her on each trip. You are right when you say its a busy place, i don't envy the escort vehicle drivers when they have to work during peak hours (now late at night when the airports slow - thats another story)

Brought the digital camera this time. In a couple of the pics you can see the paving operation in the background - time is very tight on this project and the GC has to turn the runway back over to Massport by a certain time on Sunday or they will incur huge penalties. Hope you enjoy
