Early 613 Caterpillar 1976-77. Oil from the transmission is leaking into the bell housing of the engine and coming out the starter under heavy load. There are hydraulic lines from the transmission going into the back of the bell housing in front of the two pumps. Where could the oil be leaking from? Pulling the inspection cover off the bottom of the housing and found it was filled with oil.

blink, there could be three things. Scavange pump, scavange pump screen blockage, or seals going out in the torque converter which will cause screen blockage. not sure about the early 613 but the 92x series have a inline screen coming off of the scavenge pump check it out along with the magnetic screen on the transmission if it is clean, follow the scavenge pump outflow line to the transmission unhook it and run it. there should be enough pressure at high idle to push fluid 6-10 feet. if u have good flow then the seals in the torque are bad allowing more fluid in than the scavange pump can handle.

Thanks for the information bell142. I replaced a seal on the starter solenoid and it stopped leaking from there. There should be oil in the bell housing correct? Where is the sump pump located? Thanks

there should not bemore than 1-3 gallons at anytime in that bell housing. the starter shouldnt have to be sealed. iv got 3 92x 613s and ive had plenty of experience with this same thing the pump is on the top of the bell housig it. not sure bout the early 613, but mine are in series with the transmission pump. should have a line coming off the bottom of the bell housing up to the pump.
