Hi,

Have a Volvo EC220DL Excavator. In the manual it says to check the slew gear grease level. to check it you take small diamond shape cover off under the right hand side steps and inspect level. my question is where is the level supposed to be? There is about 10mm of grease on the base of compartment. Is this normal or is it meant to be filed right to the top?

Thanks in advance.

Can you see "swirls" in the surface of the grease caused by the movement of the swing pinion..? If the answer is yes, the grease level is fine.
If no, there's not enough grease in it. However it certainly does not need to be filled right to the top, just enough so that the swing pinion picks up a small amount of grease as it turns.
The grease should be clean and not contaminated with things such as water, etc. If it is then the whole grease bath may need cleaning out and refilling with fresh grease. Have fun if that's the case.
