Made the news. Peripherally.

In pictures a few pages back, we were changing out a generator. We also had to replace the automatic transfer switch inside the building. 2,000lbs cabinet 30' down a hallway, plus the cabinet was larger than the doorway. Box went to horizontal- then through the door- then back to vertical and down the hall. We were there with a forklift and the safe jacks/ rigging equipment and spent a couple hours swapping.

Cabinet went inside the building on Wednesday- so they could get it prepped for the swap over. Cabinet change was on Sunday morning, and the electricians had to have the servers all run on battery backup, while the main power was disconnected. Batteries didn't hold up, the electricians were there until midnight making the swap over.

Took out 911 when the batteries didn't hold up. Ooops.

Why is it these are ALWAYS where Cannot get at them very well?
Yeah, I was a little greasy and grimy before we got that one swapped. Couple of the guys were fighting around trying to get the old one out, I needed the housing side, so I had to drop driveline to get some room for big hammer to get the shaft out of the axle housing.

Will also report that the new press with elec/hyd pump is as handy as a pocket on a shirt, and the cylinder has a lot of stroke. Both of which made the torque bushings a breeze.

We were talking this morning while swapping the bushings, and I'm so thankful for our shop and the tools. Yeah, it ain't no fun fixing stuff sometimes, but its sure better than just hauling it somewhere and/or having it down for weeks waiting for someone else to fix it. I need the crane monday, and there's no way that would happen if I had to have a outside person do it.

Be prepared to change out all ABS cables and sensors, cleaning the connections only works for
short term, once those corrode tough to clean. Be glad it doesn't have ABS traction control, or
does it.

I've got new wheel sensors all ordered. Right now the link belt just throws a code for wheel sensors. With a check engine light. We'll see if what I've got ordered- are the right ones when they show up. The old ones are wabco, but the part number on the wire- isn't the right wire assembly. KW dealer had that part # but the plugs on the ends are different.

KW man said they can't even get the other connectors and make up their own harness plugs- too much liability- no pieced together harnesses. So off on the search.

I think, we've found the right ones, mine use a metropak 280 wire connection, not the round barrel ones. Supposed to show up either late this week or early next week. The Fleet Pride guy came up with them from the Bendix catalog. Thank goodness they still print parts books. Parts direct from Bendix - coming out of Indiana.

The link belt man says the wires/ sensors don't even show in his books, or from the factory. But he doesn't look very hard sometimes.

Anyways, I spent all morning today- looking for oddball u-joints. Liebherr uses a driveshaft off the front crank to drive the hyd. pumps. I got a bad u-joint, so just going to replace both joints. Short 2' driveline. Driveline shop can't source the joints, but came up with a part # by measurements- but not available from their sources (captured part? maybe).

Liebherr won't sell the u-joints- just the whole shaft, but the whole driveline is on a shelf in Germany- either air freight (2-3days plus any time in customs) or 6 week slow boat. And $1,700 plus freight. Be lucky to see it by end of next week.

Driveline shop would make me a whole new shaft with common u-joints, but had to order the flange yoke ends -and they thought that would be the end of next week, because of the time to get the yokes- plus time to build it with their backlog.

I would kind of like it back together before then. Two other shops struck out, but the fleet pride guy came up with a place in wisconsin that supposedly has just the u-joints, by using the part # the driveline shop came up with. Probably off some European silage chopper- its a agricultural dealer he found them at. Might see U-joints tomorrow or monday.

Interesting factoid. Alvis also made military vehicles. The Stalwart (aka "The Stolly") was one of them.

Straight 8 rolls gas in that military creature. not the straightest tracking at road speeds either.

I was guessing either late 30's pre war or just post war construction on the car I took pictures of, but considering its the only alvis I've ever seen, I could be vastly wrong on age.

First U joints that I've bought that came in a box with no name on it, just a number. Machine shop in wisconsin had them, and I don't know if they are off Alibaba or what, but they look like the right thing.

My 90 ton's propensity for throwing codes has forced me into this. Its supposedly mostly only good for on road, which would cover my cranes. Supposed to be able to read all codes, clear, regen, cylinder cut out, show live data, etc-- but not rewrite ecm's like the full laptops.

It was used/ direct from the company, they offer free demo with return- and I think this is a return. New ones like this are $3,500 and the used one was $2,500. Its android based, so any apps from companies that are android based can be loaded onto it.

Came with OBDII and three other dongles. The little box hooks to the dongle, and the little box broadcasts bluetooth to the screen. Supposed to have about 30' range. My KW has the engine hook up in the engine bay, so this saves having to try to run a cable out the hood to the cab when trying to drive and real time view.


I just couldn't see the $10-12,000 for full texa or jpro for our limited use. But I'm hoping it can give us a direction to go if down while driving or set up on a jobsite.

Spotted this at the KW dealer. I didn't even know KW made any small cabovers. This one said Boise on the dealer tag, and I'm guessing they aren't a cheap little camper.

Sporting 425's all the way around, and I don't think the little green sand boards, are quite going to get something like this unstuck - like they would with a wrangler.

Winches front and rear, and the spare was on a winch too, because I don't know many guys that could throw a 425 up on that back rack.

Well I looked it up, and it was built by a local expedition vehicle builder. Base price is $725,000, so I don't think I'm their target market.

I've seen some of their other vehicles rolling around town before.
