Evening all,

Have had a 12G turn up in the workshop with an unusual banging noise through the back end and upon initial inspection one would think it is coming from the transmission, but we have checked transmission pickup screen for debris and is clean, unit has around 24,500 hours on it, have inspected tandems for debris, axle float and isolated each one individually and are cofident all is good there, the noise is consistent with possibly losing a tooth on the crown wheel or pinion, is especially noisey when driving in higher gears, was wondering if you can remove the diff without removing tandems after removing transmission, has any one had any experience with rebuilding the diffs in these units, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

George catman, yes after pulling transmission you can pull the diff out of its housing without pulling the tandems off. Had this very problem with a 140g a couple of years ago. The customer did the rebuild job themselves, it must have been pretty easy......TIO
