2000 Caterpillar D4C IIIXL - Our Neighbor added Diesel to Hydraulic Tank

We have a 2000 Caterpillar D4C IIIXL Hystat and have been doing some earthwork for the neighbor. We left the dozer at his place overnight and the next day he took the liberty of topping off the fuel tank. The problem is that instead of filling the fuel tank, he poured approximately 3 gallons of diesel into the hydraulic oil reservoir. The mistake was discovered halfway through the pour and the machine was never started.

We subsequently drained a portion of the hydraulic reservoir using a siphone hose and were able to extract approximately 10 gallons. We have not yet pulled the plug on the reservoir, but will do so shortly.

We are now trying to determine next steps after the reservoir has been drained. Has anyone ran into the same issue? We have read about a double oil/filter change, which contemplates draining/refilling the oil and changing filters, then running the machine for approximately 5-10 until warm. After that the oil and filters are changed again. Can anyone comment as to whether this is a sufficient fix, or is a professional hydraulic system flush required.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Nige and Cmark. Your feedback is very much appreciated. I think we will change out the filters while we are at it just in case, but glad to hear that a professional flush is not necessary.

Best,
Chase
