There are 6 of these in a c15. Each one is pumped by the camshaft and a rocker arm so that part of it is much like a mechanical fuel injection pump.
In place of a mechanical rack to control fuel delivery the solenoid with two wires to it that you see on the side controls timing and duration of injection by closing off the drain port in the plunger and barrel section forcing the fuel to build pressure and open the injection nozzle at the tip. It is a fuel pump and injector in one unit.
The solenoid is electronically controlled by the engine ecm which decides when and how long to inject fuel. This controls timing and volume of fuel injected.
That’s basically how it works.
Cat in their terminology lists it as a pump group fuel injection.

Would you mind supplying a bit of back story.?
Your OP contains a photo of a unit injector. Are you needing to change injectors or is your question related to something else.? Because if you are changing them other considerations come into play that have not been mentioned up to this point.
