A friend of mine has an old 68J D5 that’s stuck in forward gear and I’m trying to help him free it up. It’s direct drive with a clutch and manual transmission. It had been sitting for a while so I took the shifter assembly off the top and cleaned it all up. It was rusted up so I was hoping that would solve it, but I can’t get the internal linkage to move even with a pry bar.
It’s about 4 hours away and I ran out of time, but I can’t see what the problem is from the topside so I’m wondering if there is access from the bottom of that tranny if I drop the belly pan or if it has to be pulled?
The tranny was dry when we started and I didn’t see any metal in the bottom. It also drives fine forward with no unusual sounds so I don’t think it’s anything major. Any ideas on what might be locking it in forward? It seems to be down in the gears rather than linkage related.
Appreciate any advice!
