Here is the daily challenge, ID this truck! It pulled the old double gooseneck lowbed at Hope, BC and ended its days doing the same at Juskatla.

Giant spruce

Faller and scaler after dropping 17' 7" Sitka Spruce. Spruce don't come much bigger, it took him 4.5 hours to drop it with a 990G Homelite.

Looks somewhat like a late fifties kenworth although the cab doesn't look quite right.

I think you are correct. Any Sterling pictures I see have a raised band along the cab like the one in your pictures. The windshield area looks different but doesn't seem to match anything else. I guess the engine could have been a Hall Scott? I should get my dad to look at the pictures, he is pretty good at identifying old trucks. In other words (been around along time) HEHEHE!

Hey trakloader, please fire me a PM. Been trying to email you but keep getting bounced - perhaps you've changed email addresses?

Good one on this truck. I've been intrigued by it ever since I saw it in a photo taken during its days in Hope. I've done some looking around and while my first thought was also Sterling I have another theory. I'm probably out to lunch on this but the other company that made heavy duty chain drives just before WW2 was Hug. They made one which was designed as an off-road heavy dump truck, mainly to aid in the building of dams across the US. I've seen other photos of this old truck from its days with Silver Skagit and it looks similar, albeit a little smaller, to the Hug 98MB, but with a full cab. One of the big similarities for me is the drivers side platform and grab rail and ladder. The basic fender shape is also very close to the Hug truck design. Given that the truck was pretty well used even in the late 40's photos in Hope, it could possibly be a pre-WW2 truck. Also, the Siver Skagit company was formed to log the basin prior to flooding for the Ross Dam. I've seen a photo of a similar, if not the same, truck with a large rock box on it which was working the dam site. So perhaps this was an old dump truck originally bought from another dam site with the box removed. That would account for its short frame. Its all speculation but given the time frame - the late 40's- and the limited number of companies building heavy duty chain drives at the time I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility.

Couple of observations; This looks like an old skidder, it appears that they are using both the loading and the yarding engines. I am wondering where they got the wheels. Weyerhaeuser Snoqualmie had a slack line machine on steel wheels which were old RR wheels with the flanges removed and stacked about 4 to each location. these look manufactured and I have never seen any like this before. All the other steel wheel setups were like Weyerhaeuser's. Any info? The loading rig looks like a duplex loader with the double levers to the right of the engineer

I was thinking maybe a Diamond T too, but the windscreen looks wrong... Might just be a Hug, hard to find pics of them. Hey, do any of you old snags remember the name of the ship that delivered powder for C.I.L. from James Island, 1950's-60's?

Well, here's another possibility, perhaps one closer to home for this truck. From what I understand, T.A. Peterman (Peterbilt) bought the Fageol truck company in the late 30's and began building custom heavy duty chain-drive logging trucks for his operation. Apparently they were popular and he ended up supplying them to others as early Peterbilts. I still think the low cab on this dates it to pre-war so its possible this was one of those early Peterbilts, maybe even some features of the old Fageol trucks. I found no other info on these but its a possibility. Since 1949 is the date it went to Juskatla, its quite possible this was something built in the late 30's or 1940/41. Being that Peterbilt is from the west coast, this might be a better bet.

Well, it is hard to say... The old timers used to talk about "Western" dump trucks that they brought to Juskatla in 1948-49. There is a picture of one on Hank's site, I think it was in his dad's collection. Also, when Dad saw the dump truck in the Silver Skagit pictures, he said "Hey! That's a Western!" He also thought the lowbed tractor was one. So, just WHO the heck was Western??? Can't find a thing about them anywhere!

I take that back. Cab looks more like a Sterling with the 2-piece windshield.

Shovel is an American, correct?
