Newb here, just bought a new to me Dozer. JAK0001780
Will have plenty more questions in the near future. Gotta figure out how to get it home first. I live in Ohio, it’s just inside the Indiana border. 164 miles to my place in Johnstown Ohio.
I’m also going to need a used exhaust manifold for it.
Thanks!

I am looking for my first dozer. That is a nice machine. How's the undercarriage? How many hours are on it? I'm an Ohio boy as well in Cleveland.

Thank you, found out it’s a 1988. 6500 hours. I think the undercarriage is pretty decent shape. Just got it home through USHIP. That turned out good. Got it in the barn, and am going to pull the belly pans off and give it a good cleaning, then change some fluids and filters. It won’t get ran hard here, just going to make some trails in the woods and drag some wood out. I had a dresser 125E some years ago and should never had gotten rid of it. It had a 4&1 bucket on it. That was nice. So I have to get used to the controls on this case, but I think I’m going to like it. Thought my exhaust manifold was cracked, and further looking it may just be blown gaskets I hope. Someone put like JB weld around the gaskets in 3 different openings. So I’ll take the covers off and the hood and remove it and put new gaskets and bolts back on.

That sounds like just about my needs for a dozer. I hope your manifold is not cracked, that would be great if it's just the gasket. If you don't mind me asking what did you give for the machine? Just so I can get an idea of what fair prices are. Also what percent left on the undercarriage?

I don’t know what percentage on the undercarriage. I just know what to look for and if it sees a hundred hours in 2 years it’ll surprise me. I bought it from a farmer, who bought it from a farmer. I got it for 16K.

The issue with exhaust manifolds is the bolts or studs are prone to breaking when you try to remove them. That's why some people try other things to try and fix leaks. I bought a grader with a cracked manifold and several people gave the same caution. I made sheet metal patch to fit over the crack and used furnace cement underneath it to hold it in place and seal any small leaks. Then I wrapped it in high temp. header wrap that didn't require wetting it to apply. The furnace cement is good for 2700 deg's. and cheap compared to buying the tiny package's of extreme heat exhaust repair paste. It is working great and the fuel filter isn't turning black from leaking exhaust. Looks a little crude but better than dealing with broken bolts on a occasional use machine.

Thank you for your input. I was thinking they may break, but was hoping they were grade 8, they’re only supposed to be 32 pound’s torque. I may give your idea some thought.

If grade 8 are hard to drill. You could carefully try to remove one of them. There's some good video's on removing exhaust studs/bolts. The torque isn't the problem. The extreme heating and cooling locks them in place.
