Hey Just wondeering why everyone puts down the d7f mine must be hot rodded or something maybe g modified it was my first bulldozer and probably the best won as far as reliability and it was a hoggin pushin son of a gun
It originally belonged to Freesen INC. and my dad new one of the shop guys there he gave us all the info on it as it was recently rebuilt and gone thru
the engine use to never bogg from what the by standers would say and my other friend told me that he thought it would out push his dads old d8h that was a while ago, its parked but now im going to get it going i got a seal cut on the final so i parked it as i had other dozers to use as times were slow
and also it started getting doggish slow moving like down on power once it got warmed up it ran better any thoughts on that.

From what I've read on the Cat forums, the problematic reputation came from Cat using the higher revving 3306 in place of the old lower revving 4 cylinder the D7E used, but still using the older transmission.
Later 7F's and G's are fitted with the same transmission as the excellent D6C, which cured that problem.
Hope that shines a little light on the subject, maybe Ozdozer will chime in with some more complete information.

Fiat,

Visited with an old timer from the friesen camp awhile back. mentioned to him i was looking for a 6 or 7. I asked him if there was anything to stay away from, the only model he said was the D7F. I cant recall the reason, i'm thinking it was a drive train related issue but i dont remember, if i see him i'll ask again.

He was one of the founding operators and he didnt hesitate for a second when i asked the question....

well my 7f has been great to me and it belonged to freesen inc. which is one reason probably that it has done me a great job and has out lasted any of my other tractors we bought it from the local cat dealer back in 1993 and its still going although it needs a tune up and it is a late model 7f thanks for the replies

Hi fiat41b.The only thing that I've heard operators say is the d7f did not have the snap & grunt of the high horse d7e.Other then that they are a great tractor.Your d7f may have been turned up abit on the fuel rate at the pump.Good luck with the engine tune up & final drive seal replacement.
