How long does it take to get a train moving again after something like that? Do you stay overnight on the other train? Pretty country bet it was cold too. Very windy on the side of that mountain?

It took about a week. Because of the avalanche danger, we could only work during the day and when the weather was clear enough to see the mountain. Noone had to spend the night and the weather was pretty mild.

did the railcars stay on the track or get pushed off???

Most of them stayed on. A couple were blown well clear of the tracks.

How did you become involved in that type of work?

Got a job with the railroad in Alaska. :) I should point out that I'm not one of the operators, these guys work for me. That's why I have time to get good pictures.:D

Did they bomb the heck out of the snow above before you went in there?

Yes. Heli-bombed and lots of shells through the howitzer.

Here's some pics of the cleanup of the avalanche. And one of the howitzers.

great pics of the snow. we used to load and unload over the side of our lowbed as it's gooseneck did not detach. a little worrysome when it was wet and the tracks would slip but never had any issues. keep the pics coming!
