Champion 750 trans. help needed

Thinking of buying local 750 champion but the transmission has little to no reverse. It will backup on hard level ground in 1st gear but only at an idle, must be very gentle. The other 3 reverse gears do nothing. All forward gears seem to work good.
Anyone have any ideas, solutions?
