Does anyone have pictures they're willing to share of their DIY Nut Buster? I need to repack one of the boom cylinders on my PC128UU, and the 80-mm nut torques to 4200 ft-lbs. I've got a hydraulic power supply and various small cylinders to use for this project. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel. . . . Was wondering what others have built?

As far as loosening we used a big slug wrench we had cut from plate and took tension up with a 3/4 ton chain comealong then hit the wrench with a sledge and off she went1000000644.jpg

Only thing I might want to change to that set-up would be to improve the end holding the pin end of the ram. Like the fact that you supported the rod on wood blocks to save the chrome!

Just don't have the safety people around while using that method! I know the MSHA guys would not be happy with some of the things we did back in the day at the quarry shop.

Rent a hydraulic torque wrench or get a hydraulic shop to loosen it on a cylinder bench. 4200 ft./lbs. is insane and likely takes more than that to loosen it.

I burned out some plate for my DIY nut buster. I'm going to use a pair of 4" bore cylinders which will give me right around 40,000 foot-pounds of torque. The frame will be a 10-foot piece of 12" NPS Schedule-Heavy pipe. I got some large metric ball bearings from China - thankfully before the tariffs kicked in. It's my design, but not my idea. There's similar machines in production from various manufacturers. The main difference is mine will cost 1500 to build - using surplus steel.

Here's a small hydraulic power supply that I previously built for my tubing bender. Going to use it to power the nut buster also.

I took a cylinder to my local hydraulic shop. Had to drop it off in back. Their torque bench power unit is a 460 Ford. Guess they built it as a power unit for someone long years ago and got it back.
