Here is a truck of CE Routh's, a 74 Hayes HDX that he picked up in Alberta, was used in the oil field as it had a 2 speed aux. trans with a power tower on it behind the allision. had a KTA 600 Cummins, 6061 allision and 121 clarks. we took out the a-box and moved the allision back about 2 feet. had the long wheel base and rode very smooth. was a good unit for lowbeding. last heard it got totaled in Security Bay camp, only got these pics when we first got it.

Ya, thats my dad working on the truck. Its parked right now cause the water tank doesn't have the capacity for the haul we're doing. The truck originally had a 8V71 when we bought it. The other one we bought we converted to a gravel truck and also put a natural 12 in.

I have a question, mabey it's been answered already and I have missed it, so don't bite my head off!
The water tanks mounted behind the cab, are they for cooling the brakes?

Ya, the tanks are used to cool the brakes. If you go back in this thread to around post 66 I think, they talk about it. I think if you go through it there's even some pictures posted.

GreatwestCam, Interesting pictures and info. Long wheelbase - do you remember how long? I think HDX has told me standard was 225".

Hayesno1, I dont know in inchs how long, but it had the fuel tank between the cab and water tank (cant see it in pic at all) and with 14 foot bunks when turned there was still about a foot clearance to the water tank. A guess would be about 20-24" longer then standard. Was a little tighter to come around some of the switchbacks then the other trucks. Forshners had one also, unit 113, that was longer, I remember them saying it was 18" more then the other trucks. HDX most likey would know the spec for these units.

Hayesno1, good eye! that is the same truck, Forshner's picked up 6 HDX's from Wedeene River, Terrace area when some land claim issues shut down logging in that area in the mid 80s. Forshners kept two Hayes (113 & 114) and a 79 Pacific P 16.
Here is a few pic's of thier trucks.
1- has trucks #108, 114, 113. L-R
2 & 3- 113 as how they got it in 85.

It sure is enjoyable seeing the pictures and hearing about everything. It is just so amazing to see the size of the loads they were hauling, on steep winding roads. From trucks to machines very enjoy, and thanks to all of you that take time to share pictures and stories.

The hoods and fenders as well as running boards were made in Campbell River at CR Sheetmetal There was quite a number of rebuilt trucks that were given these. The trucks pictured above both still have their original HAYES water tanks on them but with lots of new guarding on them-- their brushguards also have been reworked somewhat Dont know why they always deleted the front air cleaner bracket and siamesed the two together at the rear like above.Oh well they own them so they can fix them up any way they want, At least they are being looked after and used.
