Do you idle the machine ? excessive idle time can cause oil consumption. 4-5 gallons in 250 hours isn't all that much for that big of an engine, that's less than a gallon per 40 hr week. I've got a brand new out of the crate C-15 in one of my 623's it uses about 1/2 that amount and a healthy 4000 hour 3406 in the other and it uses about a gallon a week.

It's a radial seal filter, idler. Radial seal filters don't seal by compressing the rubber at the end of the filter, they seal on the inner ring of the rubber end of the filter. It would get dirty at the outside end of the filter. ;)

We experimented with different makes and types of air filters on our wheeled loaders that worked in the choking dust in the slag pits at the steelworks. A very quick and simple, but effective method of finding out if any dust got passed the air filters was to put a small blob of clear grease just after the filter element, inside the intake ducting and see how much grit/dust, if any stuck to it.
