I bought a slightly used Bobcat HB980 hammer at an auction.

Took the hoses of to repaint it and you guessed it.....forgot to mark which was which....

Does anybody know if the orientation of the hoses matters? Thanks for the help.

yes it does matter there should be marks on the hammer right above the lines (T) for tank or return and (P) for pressure

If you hook them up backwards, the lines will get all stiff and nothing happens. It might fire once or push the point out. If this happens, you know you gotem backwards.
