Hello all, It was raining today and I was on the computer looking through classified ads and stumbled across a 1994 Cat 426B with 4005hrs for $10K about 9 miles from the house....so I bought it! It's a EROPS with heat and AC, 2wd, GP bucket, plumbed with extra hydraulics front & rear. I can see the outline of an old Fabick sticker on it, It's number 279 from the 1994 production run, USA built (6KL). The owner roaded it here and in the time it took I figure he had to have a 20mph speed average!

The hour meter appears to be the original and it's working. I do believe I got a good deal finally! What a Beast the 426 is! I have had a 416B and lastly a JD 310D, this pig will outwork either one I believe. I feel like I saved this old Cat from an owner who was abusing it. All fluids were low, kids were operating it, grease zerk's dry, ect, ect. I will start by base lining it with fluid flush and all new filters & fluids. Brakes are great, it starts easy, turbo spins up good and hydraulics are very strong. There seems to be almost zero slop in the driveline from forward to reverse so I'm thinking I may have a good 'ol hoe for the farm again. Don't get me wrong, she has been rode hard and put up wet for a year but....it's a Cat!

QUESTIONS; It has 2 hydraulic lines capped at the front bucket, there is a hole in the loader control rubber for a second stick. Is this going to be easy to add a 4 in 1 or Multi purpose bucket too? I HOPE SO!
Would it be worth converting to 4 wheel drive? I'm guessing a transmission change (with transfer case front drive) front axle and the electrical harness?

ANY information, experiences and things to look for information would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Thanks in advance!Cat 426 1.jpgCat 426 2.jpgCat 426 3.jpgCat 426 4.jpg

Leave it 2wd; you'll pay more than you bought the hoe for in parts to do it. If you're some kind of swamp operator, then you bought the wrong machine.

I've had my Ford 2wd buried to the frame and pulled it out with the bucket and hoe. I stay away from the quick sand now...

Nice machine, I agree, if you wanted a 4X4, you should have purchased one.
If your going to do snow, just get a good set of chains, maybe a new set of rear tires and have them loaded if you need more weight, why do you think you'll need a 4X4.

Everything I have ever had before was 4x4. There is a BIG difference when loading the bucket with dirt and....for the occasional time I go a little to far in soft soil.
I found a NEW Cat 4 in 1 bucket for $2500.00 so I'm going to put it on. The first thing I noticed about this 426 was how heavy in the rear it is! It has the front weight installed but it almost seems out of balance. The 4 in 1 will add some weight as would a front axle. IF....I can find a front axle & transfer case for cheap I will get it.
Yes, the trailer was the owners 14K. You can see the tires are overloaded with 15K worth of Cat on it! I have a 20K to haul it if needed but it's just a farm tractor and will be used for moving/installing dozer parts working on a IH TD20-200 im restoring. I did just get out and dig some 24" hickory stumps while the ground was soft and Man, what a beast this thing is digging.

Nice machine! Good Price! I have a 97 426C IT and it has been a very good beast for me! This link on the forum speaks volumes about the benefits of a 4in1 bucket.: https://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/showthread.php?28412-Do-4-in-1-buckets-hold-up
The four wheel drive is nice, but with chains and good operating skills you can go and do pretty much everything a 4x4 does. My bucket configuration is a bit different as I have the quick change system that it came with.

Nice looking machine! I can imagine the work it will do compared to a 416. I'm feeling good about getting the new CAT 4 in 1 for $2250.00 plus it weighs about 1600lbs. which will help with my rear heavy feeling of the 2wd 426. I have had 4 in 1's on everything I have owned in the past so I'm familiar with how valuable they are. I just couldn't pass up a '94 426 for 10 grand!
Thanks

You really got a steal as I figure that machine is worth about 17 k. If your tread is good in the rear then you will be fine with two wheel drive. If you want to improve your digging performance you might want to add teeth to that 4 in 1. I have a 4 in 1 and I am in the process of adding teeth to the clam. Which will be great as I can flip up the clam and still have a smooth blade for finishing work.
