Local 7 Ironworkers out of South Boston, MA have toiled since February 2010 to build the support towers of a unique center span lift bridge over the Chelsea River between Chelsea and Boston, Massachusetts.
Employed by Saugus Construction Corp. , under lead contractor, J.F. White Contracting Co. they have assembled, erected and bolted up almost 2500 tons of steel.
At the demand of the US Coast Guard the 75 year old Chelsea Street Bridge, built by Bethlehem Steel, has been deemed an threat to Massachusetts' fuel supply and must be replaced.
The new $125million bridge will have a 175 foot lifting height with a 450 foot wide span to accept any size ship along the Chelsea River. The new bridge is expected to open in April 2012.
