Hi guys, I'm having an issue with my 97 310d that is really starting to p**s me off. It is yard machine that only gets used occasionally but has been reliable for the year that I have had it but now it won't start about half the time. Some times it will start right away and run like a dream. Other times it starts immediately but dies right away. You can then crank it over till the cows come home but it will not start. I have to carry ether with me now because sometimes it is the only way it will start. Once it is running it always runs good and will do so for the rest of the day. It never gets below freezing here so I cant see weather being the issue especially since at times it will start no problem. It has about 7200 hrs on it and I recently replaced all fluids and filters. Any ideas? Thanx in advance. Rick

sounds like the fuel may be leaking back to the tank, but I don't know where the check valve is on a 310G. Did the problem start when you changed fuel filters?

totally off the subject: where in Canada does it never freeze?

The problem did not start with the filter change, no real trigger that I can figure out. I could understand something like fuel leaking back to the tank but why would it only happen some of the time. Sometimes it can sit for a month and start right up other times it won't start after sitting a day. I'm from southern B.C. Doesn't go below freezing very often. Thanx for the reply.

Does the lift pump have a manual priming lever on it? If so, have you tried operating the primer lever after it dies and see if it then fires off?

When you get old you leak sometimes and sometimes you don't, that's all the reason it needs.

You can go through the fuel hoses and inspect all the rubber for cracks or wet spots from leaking (flex the rubber hoses at the connections, that's where they crack first), or pull all the rubber off and replace it, including the rubber grommets. Could pull the intake and return fittings off the injection pump and clean them up. Or put a tank on top of the cab and forget about it.
