JLG n40e will not move

Hi Guys! I am new to this forum and also to my JLG n40e. I purchased it used about 6 months ago and it worked for me for approxamately 60 hours flawlessly. After using it all day to work on my pole lights I was returning it to my building when it stopped running in reverse. Everything else worked. It turned out to be the motor contoller. Bought a new one and it worked fine except I noticed that my batteries drained much to fast. (Less than 3 hours of use) I recharged the batteries and turned off the key and shut off all switches. Within 24 hours it was discharged with nothing on. I then recharged again and pulled the main battery bank connectors 48 hours latter full charge remained. I can't hear any humming or feel any wires getting warm in the motor compartment or anywhere else. I tried to move the machine and now it won't go forward or reverse or respond to left and right command. The motor controller is flashing 11 times which is for faulty speed controller. Does anyone have any ideas how I should proceed? Any help will be greatly appreciated

It may be a drive motor that is shunting to chassis.

Please check the routing of the large cables to and from the
Motors, Motor Controller and Contactors.
Verify they are connected correctly.

I reworked and colored the drawings to make the wiring easier to follow.
Note the corresponding colors between the schematic and wiring drawings.

Thanks for the info. I checked the wiring and all is correct on the 98079 download diagram. I am not sure what I am looking for on the other download. Also to answer your question everything functions as normal from base or basket except for driving when in basket. No forward, reverse or steering control. Also the JLG motor controller flashes 11 times when in basket and foot on safety pedal and when I turn key to base it also flashes 11 times.

It is a schematic representation of the other wiring diagram. Most technicians prefer an actual schematic as opposed to a wiring diagram.

Also, to answer your question, everything functions as normal from base or basket except for driving when in basket. No forward, reverse or steering control...

The motor controller is probably ok as it controls both the lift and drive speeds.
The Changeover Contactor (#2 in the drawings) determines where the output of the motor controller goes to, either the drive motors or the pump motor.

On the B- post of the motor controller is a gaggle of ground wires tied together on the B- terminal.
Be sure they all made it back there when the new motor controller was installed.

On the Tach Interface Card (located just to the left of the motor controller) is a 20 amp fuse.
Be sure the fuse is not blown. It will give the problem you are having if it is blown.
Check it with an ohmmeter.

If these things check ok, then onward:



Steering is the simplest of the drive functions. It bypasses the motor controller.

We need to focus on all things common to drive/steer:

In the platform control box is a 5 amp circuit breaker that provides 48 volts + for the Joystick Circuit Board and the Steer Switches when the footswitch is pressed.

There is a Ground wire at the Joystick Circuit Board

Check for 48+ volts and a Ground at the Joystick Controller Plug.
Pin 1 of this plug is the Ground
Pin 9 of this plug is 48+ volts for the Steer Switches (with foot pedal pressed)
Pin 4 of this plug is 48+ volts for the Drive Joystick Circuit Board (with foot pedal pressed)


I think we will find the problem here somewhere.

Sorry I haven"t got back sooner but I was called away on other business and was unable to accesss the machine untill today. I checked pins 1, 9, and 4 and all is as it should be other than my meter shows 46 volts. What next?

Next step will be to check the output of the joystick at pins 6, 5, 2, 8 and 7

edit:
I forgot some very important information

using pin 1 for the negative point of the voltmeter:
pins 7 and 8 should give a 48 volt signal when the appropriate steer switch is pressed

pins 5 and 6 should give a 48 volt signal when the appropriate drive direction is selected

pin 2 should be a proportional signal changing in voltage with regards to joystick deflection in either forward or reverse from a value of about 5 volts in neutral down towards 0 volts at full deflection of the joystick

Pin 2 same as above except reverse polarity. Testing took about 1/2 hour during which time I went form 46 volt to 44 volt and the charge light went fom full to half charge.

E40 jlg will not drive forward or reverse

Will this procedure help to trouble shoot this problem? We had change contactor and rebuilt right motor. At the platform, the steering works and the boom lifts. It will just not move. We are getting 6 led flashes and then 10 led flashes. Had a rep out to look at it and could not find prolem, said motor was possible answer.
