i was just wondering what size truck do you guys use to pull goose neck trailers i have a 04 dodge 3500 4x4 hd i use

I wouldn't be pulling with a Dodge :IMO

When Dodge comes out with the 4500 and you want to stick with a Dodge it would be far better than your 1 ton.

You get 19.5 wheels which means better tires for load carrying capacity then you have better brakes behind those wheels.

A friend of mine has a tandem axle gooseneck it has a 14,000lb gvw but its always overloaded. He pulls it with a OBS Ford PSD dually its heavy some of the loads he has carried he climbs the hills at 20 mph with the 4 way flashers on.

He has the best brake controller you can get the trailer brakes are well adjusted. When the trailer needs brakes he replaces everything so its all brand new.

He knows its not legal what he is hauling so he is looking for a trailer toter.

the only thing i really haul with it is my dozer and my kubota m5040 and my lawnmower

I haul all over the state with my rig.

2005 Silverado 3500 diesel, single rear wheels.

9900 GVW truck, 24000 GVW trailer.

Max legal trailer load is 18000 lbs. I have had up to 23000 lbs. on her.

Mostly flat lands in FL. Some bridges and hilly parts I slow down a bit. The Sun Shine Sky Way bridge in Tampa towing a 2.5 ton army truck I start out at 65 after the toll booth, by the time I am at the top I am doing 45 mph.

No chips or mods on my truck!

I am looking to get a Pete 330. Half for the sleeper, half for the power and fuel millage.

Empty trailer I get 12 mpg. Loaded some times as low as 6 mpg.

The days are ending hauling loads with regular 1 ton trucks with 12,000lb gvws because the trucks are under braked etc. Even the newer 1 tons with 17 inch wheels and 4 wheel disk brakes the trucks don't have the braking capacity as a truck with 19.5 rubber.

There is way too many people on the roads today and most of them don't pay attention when they drive. You get some moron cutting in front of you and they think your going to stop on a dime :mad:

You leave a buffer zone bettween you and the car in front of you to have some room to stop if need be but as I mentioned somebody moves in to your buffer zone.

Good application is dodge, specially with a Cummins Motor and Manual Transmission, Fireman i'm assuming you have a Cummins and Manual 5 or 6 Speed in that baby!!.....

We have a Ford 550 Cab and Chassis, 9ft flat bed and a Big Tex 22GN dually Tandem set up, unfortunately the truck has a 6.0 Navistar Motor, Biggest mistake in our lives. it's been in the garage more than it's had loads on it. the trailer is pretty stout, and i think Navistar finally worked the bugs out of it, however there is still no trust in this truck, i plated the truck in combination for 40,000lbs, the empty weight of the truck and trailer 17,000lbs add that to your 22,000lbs rated trailer and you get 39,000lbs the truck doesnt like anything over 18,000lbs on her back which never puts you over weight, but i've seen dodges hook into that very same trailer and put 23,000lbs on the floor and with the Cummins motor that truck laughs at it!!

Ford-LT - in a way your right about 19.5 wheels being better for stopping power, alot of guys who have drove truck become spoiled with the Jake Brake and get lazy when it comes to down shifting. No matter what you use to pull a Gooseneck application rule of thumb is to always down shift, jake brake or no jake brake, i agree with you on the under braking of 1 ton trucks but we go back to rule of thumb "Downshifting" Using a 1 ton truck isn't the problem it's the guy driving it that has no idea about weight. Professional drivers downshift, use your gears to hold you back 1 ton or 5 ton/17inch or 19.5 wheels doesn't matter!!

Me - I prefer the bigger the better. In my travels i also like DirtySouth have looked into a single axle Peterbilt 330, only thing is with the new emissions BS i kinda frowned away from that idea and being a Cat man, Caterpillar has been having some difficulty with they're new twin turbo motors and after i spec'd it out and got the grand total of $75,000 i ran as far away as i could get. My solution to the problem was a old 1997 Peterbilt 357 Triaxle that had been rolled over. For a little less than $30,000 we've been building this truck the way we want it, plus we know what we have, Motor & Transmission. So far none of the 4500-5500 Chevys, and 4500-500 Dodge impress me much yet.

Yes, having 19.5 rubber will last longer, and stop better.

But they don't seam to do much else to the truck.

Still the same engine and tranny.

Same power moving more mass.

No one at the local Dodge dealer knows about the 4500-5500s. I saw one at a gov. expo a few months ago.

And those Ford and Int. fans out there, don't even talk!

My goal is to get the Pete 330 by years end.
