Hi folks,
I've been reading and reading posts here for the last year without registration and I've acquired lots of useful tips. I just wanted to share my story about my 1986 John Deere 510B backhoe. I've bought this beast last year from a gentlemen who said it would not go in reverse at all. Upon having it delivered to my summer house I started to investigate more and more the reverse brake problem with limited tools. Took apart the directional control valve (spool) as well as the pressure regulating valves but they were perfect without any signs of broken/stuck springs and appeared extremely clean. Pressure was good. Drained the reverser oil and it appeared milky (humidity) and I'm pretty sure there wasn't 17 quarts in it in the first place.
Added new J20C JD oil in it and made more tests. The results were :
Foward is Foward
Neutral is Foward (not as strong as foward)
Reverse is Neutral (driveshaft not spinning at all, slowly crawling to a complete stop coming from neutral)
Also, when depressing the clutch, the driveshaft was still spinning... That was weird not to say the least.
I'm not sure the 510B reverser is a Borg Warner on this unit, but there are belleville washers in the foward clutch pack, so I suspected in the first place it could be the culprit. It turns out I took apart the reverser side cover (thank you JD for such easy access) without removing the reverser case from the unit, took out the foward and reverse clutch packs. The Belleville washers were perfect.
The foward clutch pack appeared to be permanently stuck/engaged, I could not turn the inside spline freely. Unbolted/opened the foward clutch pack and voila, all the clutch disk compound were desintegrated, stack together in a sandwich that was locking the clutch pack at all times. Probably the results of a low oil condition from previous owner. The reverse clutch disks were undamaged but used.
Ordered the 4 clutch plates as they were weaved, 4 clutch disks for foward and 2 reverse as well as reverse piston seals. Altough this is my first backhoe repair, I tried replacing every thing I could afford, endend up with a 1000$ bill for parts from JD industrial (got all filters also..). I really needed this thing to be repaired during my honeymoon here at the summer house. (Hey, my wife didn't matter she was all around caring for rabbits and doing MX jumps :notworthy
