Hello all.
I recently purchased a Cat 287C for home/ camp personal use. It has a flashing light and beeps only when moving. I am guessing it is a speed sensor. I want to fix this 1st then get into some of the smaller stuff like pins/ bushings and maintenance.

I do not have the optional screen on the right side, it seems this would be how to pull codes. Is there another way or can someone steer me towards what is needed to be able to?

I think I fell victim to buyer beware/ and not being informed. It is my 1st track loader. I bought this as advertised as high flow, 2 peed, but I dont think it has either of those features. Lesson learned, and honestly, I would have bought it anyways. I would like to find a build spec list, and manuals, operator and service if someone has a source. I dont know what all the controls even do yet.

Serial number MAS00577

Thanks in advance.

Not having the optional RH upper panel makes things more difficult. The only option in your case is to have someone hook Cat ET to the machine and download a Product Status Report. Note that ET is not dealer-only, a lot of independents have it too.

There are three manuals in total for your machine. I'll put the references here so that you can search for them.
Operation & Maintenance covers the controls, operation and periodic preventive maintenance tasks. Cat Publication reference SEBU8020. Here's a genuine OEM one on eBay. New OEM price is $75.

Parts - SEBP4569. Here's a genuine OEM one on eBay from the same source as the O&M Manual for $135. New OEM price $245.

Service - KENR5189. This is priced new at $750 in paper form and $485 in pdf on a CD. Note that it also includes the O&M Manual SEBU8020. See HERE

Thank you! I have seen some of the ET interfaces online reasonable. Are they any good for a DIY'r? Or can that display be added to be able to do it in cab?

The display can be added, but it’s not cheap. Let me look for the instructions/part numbers.
EDIT: See attached. The 264-8861 Part number of panel mentioned in that document updates to 346-6336.

Non-genuine ET can be a minefield for the novice. I would recommend that you stay away from that option until you have more experience/knowledge.

Thanks again- looks like the display is discontinued from CAT. Says to contact dealer. I will start the hunt to see if I can find a used one. Then find someone with ET to program it. The switch is available to add creeper mode.

Thanks again! That number worked- I tried the one in the TSB you shared. I will call around to some salvage yards to see if I can find one. Seems like 2K by the time I am done could be better spent on the machine. I'll call my local CAT dealer to see how much to have her scanned for now.
I am really assuming it is a speed sensor. I may just ohm them and change them out to see if it resolves the warning for now. Hopefully it isnt to much of a PITA to get to them.

Don't discount the possibility of a local independent who also has the diagnostic software. Probably cheaper. With a dealer you could easily end up paying 4-5 labour hours including travel. The other option would be haul it to whoever will do the job. I don’t know if that is a possibility. Whoever does the job tell them you need an Adobe pdf copy of the Product Status Report (PSR) that he downloads from the machine. By protocol it should be done automatically but it seems like a lot of service people don’t do it unless the customer asks.

Ohming the speed sensors will tell you nothing because that’s not how they work. There are 4 sensors, 2 on each side, each pair installed in a common body. Depending on which one is faulted, and how, there will be a troubleshooting procedure specific for that particular sensor and fault code. Be aware that it is quite common for the wiring to get damaged so you may not have a sensor problem at all. That’s where the diagnostics come in.

Thanks for potentially saving me hours of frustration. I read they could be ohmed, and I didnt know there were 2 per side. I have reached out to some local companies to hopefully find someone to help with the diagnosis. I will let you know how I make out.

A suggestion that might help you at least determine on which side of the machine the problem lies.

If you can get it up on blocks so that the tracks can spin freely try operating one track at a time and see which one sets off the alarm, if indeed the fault is only on one side. If only one side is faulting then you could start by taking a good look at the wiring for that side. If you find nothing then try swapping the sensor assemblies from side to side and see if the problem moves with it (so sensor fault) or whether it stays where it is (wiring fault).

I didnt know there were 2 per side.
You will only see one sensor body per side, but within it are two sensors. That’s how the Machine ECM determines both speed and direction of travel.

Congrats on the 287C. The flashing light and beeping while moving does sound like a speed sensor or possibly damaged wiring near the drive motors. Pretty common on those machines.

Without the right-side monitor, pulling codes is a lot harder unfortunately. Your Cat dealer should still be able to run the serial number and give you the build sheet plus operator/service manuals.

And honestly don’t feel too bad about the high flow/2 speed thing. A good running 287C is still a very useful machine either way.

Thanks- I am not to upset about it. I would have bought it either way. I got it for 18K, so not a steal but fair I think- I know it needs tracks and a few odds and ends but seems to run really good with 4180 hrs. This is my 1st true track loader. I had a very small wheeled bobcat skidsteer years ago that I got rid of when I bought a tractor, then bought a Tak TL26 that had some issues. Decided that was too much of a ticking time bomb with the parts' unavailability.

I am looking forward to getting this right and put to work. I am looking for a cheap set of used tracks to limp me along for a while, that gauge on the right and some other small parts if anyone knows of someone with access to used parts?
