I have always filled an engine by using the dipstick and common sense but i was told today that some engine needed to be over the full mark???

Never seen that. I normally look it up and write with pain pen so I'll remember next time. Some stuff it might be 2-3+ years between changes.

I changed the oil on my Bobcat yesterday, the low and high marks are near 2" apart on the dipstick.
Most things Ive worked on it's either 1-2 quarts on small sumps or maybe a gallon on large ones.

I just put 14 qts, what the manual says, but low is more like 10 and high probably 15-16.
