Hey there everyone,

got a few cat machines here with the same code and it’s leading to regens not being performed and de-rates.

the machines are Cat TL943c serial is TH00230 and engine serial number is CJG00954. They have 3.4B engines in them. Code is 5055:17 and 5055:18.

Oil changes performed regularly, cat filters (oil, fuel, crankcase) 15w40 on one and 10w30 synthetic on another.
Cat says there is no oil viscosity sensor, and for oil pressure there’s only a switch which has 1 pin and is meant for the gauge only. When hooked up to a diagnostic software it on data monitor and you disconnect the oil pressure switch it says “low” and when you plug it in it says “3000mbar”. We hooked up a mechanical gauge to it and it’s within Cat’s spec.
Code stays active after an oil change. A tech came in from our local cat dealer and said he’s never seen a code for oil viscosity.

no idea where to go from here. Pls help lol

edit:
2 new oil pressure switches were used for this. And the ecm supplies that switch with only a ground it seems.

Sorry I only just spotted this.
I think you may possibly be confusing Diagnostic Codes and Suspect Parameter Numbers (SPN).
I would have also included Event Numbers (EID) in this discourse but there is no Event Number 5055 in the system as yet.
There is, however, an SPN 5055 which as you mentioned is for engine oil viscosity. But I don't think that's your problem. We have TL943C machines but unfortunately they are not TIER 4 and don't have exhaust aftertreatment installed, so I can't even use one of ours as a guinea pig.

A Diagnostic Code will be in two parts - the Component Identifier (CID) and the Failure Mode Indication (FMI). Like an Event Code the CID can be up to five digits long, but the CID (up until now anyway) is always two digits long.
What you have - 5055:17 & 5055:18 appear to be classic cases of Diagnostic Codes. The big BUT is that CID 5055 is for "Electric Energy Storage Device #1 Current Sensor" - so it can't be that. Neither are there FMIs 17 & 18 in the system yet.

When you say it's "been hooked up to diagnostic software" do you mean it's been hooked up to Cat ET or to some other aftermarket system.? If it was aftermarket i can only strongly suggest that you get Cat ET hooked up to one or more of the machines that are giving problems and generate a Product Status Report (PSR) for each one. The PSR will be in the form of an Adobe Acrobat file. Post those files up here and let's have a look at them.

Hello. I had the same problem with the Caterpillar 427 F2 with C3.4 engine. The code was 5055-17. I solved it.
The engine ECM calculates the amount of fuel in the engine oil based on the engine operating conditions and the number of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) active regenerations since the last time the "Engine Oil Life Reset" was performed.
To clear this code I needed to perform the "Engine Oil Life Reset" shown within the service menu in Caterpillar Electronic Technician. I connected my chinese copy od Caterpillar Communication Adapter. I clicked Service> Oil Life Reset> Reset. A few clicks and problem solved. I am attaching two files from Caterpillar SIS and a photo from Caterpillar Electronic Technician.
