Sonar backing systems

We installed a Groenveld sonar detection system on one of our Komatsu WA320 loaders last year to help our pipe crews avoid damage to equipment and most of all personnell! It works with both an audible alarm and light system in the cab. The different lights and sounds tell the operator how close an object is to the rear of the equipment. It's proved very successful and useful for manuevering in tight spaces. I know a lot of the stone quarries utilize camera systems, but seems like a monitor in the cab draws away the operator's attention? Curious if anyone else has tried any type of backing system and what their opinion was? I'm leaning toward another system on a new loader coming in this week......so any feedback is appreciated.

I havent used a sonar system on a machine, but my superduty does have one and it makes backing up in tight spots alot easier, same with hooking up trailers. So i would think that they would be great on a loader

Kevin,

Deere introduced their new K series loaders at Conexpo last week. Part of the K-series update was a new backup camera coupled with a rear object detection system (RODS). Pretty slick system in that the new monitor pulls double duty as the camera monitor. The operator can set the system to work one of three ways.
  1. Turn the camera on manually
  2. Set the camera to come on only in reverse
  3. Set the camera to come on only when the RODS system detects an object

Regardless of which camera mode, when an object is detected by the RODS system it alerts the operator by an audible alarm in the cab. Pretty slick system.

Here is a picture of the monitor.

Farm Boy,
That monitor also is the scale if customer buys that option - I am sure you already knew that.:) Geno

10-4:drinkup....it is in standby mode in the upper right hand corner. The only thing that is pretty cool is the bale counter in the upper middle box. You have up to 5 different counters for bucket loads, truck loads etc.:cool2 Just a little thing, but it means no more screwing an old school hay bale counter to the ROPS post!!
