thanks I would appreciate it a lot, I have a machine that worked great until today when it decided to steer in one direction only.
I'm not sure how to differentiate between the different types of valves< bertea and racine? thanks again

Well, all the steer valves in 40F's were Racine, referred to in this thread as "bang-bang" valves. Most common problem would be a bad ground or broken wires at the valve coils. Usually located in a stack of 3 valves on the same side of the machine where the hydraulic tank is located. manuals sent

hey Im not sure what you mean by steering toggle, I do have a steering select toggle below the main control panel but I only have one steering axle. the drive axle is fixed in place by factory as far as I can tell. I will take some more photos of the control panel and ground control panel later to show you what a mess it is. I enclosed some photos of the steering/drive joystick. I don't recognize these from any of the options in the manual, I'm assume multiple people have worked on machine over the years. do you recognize this joystick? one of the little springs was just laying in the bottom so I put it back in thinking that would fix it...haha wishful thinking.

wow, that's really old! One of the first JLG's, they made their own controllers for a while.
Good news is, that controller is made up of 4 very common micro switches, and most likely one of them failed. Check the power into and out of the micro switch that moves - when you steer the direction that no longer works. That will tell you whether your problem is a control, or further down the line.
Later JLG's used a spring loaded (return to center) toggle switch for steering. It would be quote easy to convert your machine to a toggle on the dash for steering. All you'd need is an unused hole.

new owner of a 40f and don't know much about them. i'd also really appreciate the wiring diagrams if you don't mind sharing. I bought mine needing a head gasket which turned into needing a motor. I put a 30hp diesel in it. got it running but as soon as I start it the boom starts to go up. and that's about all the movement I get out of it. it did swing left one time from the ground box. the bucket controls aren't doing anything. my email is [email protected] if you could send me any info id really appreciate it.

Does anyone know what the tire pressure should be on the 40f? The stickers that should have the pressure on them are gone and the manuals don't seem to say. Also what diameter are the valve stems? they're bigger than automotive so I'm guessing .625"?

I'd go a minimum pressure of 50 PSI, maximum 65 PSI.
There are two sized of common valve stems, .453 and .625, any tire shop should have lots of them.

that tire shop must do nothing but passenger car tires. Try another one. They aren't uncommon at all. Try a NAPA store, they sell them too.

depending on how many ply the tires were, it could be correct. I was playing it safe.
If you've ever had a tire "zipper" on you while filling it up.......you learn to respect the rubber.
