I am completely new to this Forum section so at this point in time I need not only help in the Forum, but also with my Case 580B backhoe. I am unable to shift into 1st or 2nd gear. Also, the guage remains in the red. Don't know if it's working or not. HELP!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum dig4me. :drinkup

Are you saying you can't move the transmission lever at all into 1st and 2nd gear slots? Or lever moves but can't get it into either position? You're probably going to have to pull the shift lever cover to find out where the problem lies. Keep in mind, shift lever covers can be tricky to remove on some transmissions, shifting fork/s will hang on tranny case, sometimes you have to select a certain gear position to release cover from tranny gears.

Thanks alot for responding to my problem with my 580B Case backhoe. I haven't had any time to respond.
The shifting lever will go in 3rd and 4th gear but won't go into 1st or 2nd. It moves over to them but doesn't
go up or down. I will take the cover off and look in. Thank you for the

I recently picked up a 580b I also cant get it to go into 1st or 2nd gear it goes into 3rd and 4th without any issues and the shuttle goes forward and backward in 3rd and 4th with out issue. i pulled the shifter and plate off i can move the gears around without issue. I have tried setting the shifter up on my bench to try to get it to go in to 1st but cant figure out where it is holding up.the shifter goes over to the 1st 2nd spot but not up or down to engage the gear.
Thank you to anyone that can point me in a direction

There's a blocker pin between each rail (#22 in the handy view Willie provided) that locks one rail until the other is perfectly in neutral, so you can't put it into two gears at once by accident. Sounds like either the 3-4 rail is not lining up exactly right to let the blocker move, or the blocker is rusted into place from setting.

Hi All,
I have this same issue on my 1974 Case 580B. I want to remove the top shift cover but have read somewhere there are check balls that can fall out when removing the cover. What steps should I do to prevent this from happening? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve

Nothing should fall out.
