Hey guys, new here. My 4 co-workers and i man the garage for a small family owned quarry op. We work on all types of stuff, bosses lawn mower, Mack dumps, catapillar end dumps, rock drill, forklifts ect. Our recent head scratcher is a Volvo 220 E wheel loader with electronic controlled centrally mounted injectors, has new injector sleeves, new feed pump, new primary filter base with primer. this machine will not start without ether or some other fuel already in the combustion chamber at time of crank. After changing injector sleeves machine fired right up but only because of the fuel lost into the combustion chamber when removing the old ones. When we shut the machine off and tried to crank it over just 5-10 seconds later it again wouldnt start. This is making me lean towards an electrical issue. No smoke while cranking so im assuming no fuel while cranking even though the injectors are getting fuel and power. The only fault code is for a broken coolant level sensor, can anyone confirm that this is or is not causing my no start condition? If so why can it be over ridden with a shot of ether? and if not what could be causing my injectors not to open at a crank but run perfectly fine once a quick shot of ether or raw fuel is in the combustion chamber at crank? thanks in advance- Brad

I think it's common rail injectors .if it has a oil leak in the rail it will not let it built enough pressure while cranking with starter to let the injectors fire but as soon as it has some sort of fuel in it to fire it spins over fast enough to overcome leak to built oil pressure and signal it to start firing injectors

The D12D does not have a common rail fuel system. They are electrically actuated mechanical injectors that use a rocker off the camshaft to operate them. The coolant level sensor should not cause a no start issue. Either you have an issue with fuel draining back out of the head or your injectors need replacing. One part that can cause issues is the fuel overflow valve or breather valve on the return line coming out of the head. Any air leaks in the suction side of the fuel system can cause this also. Check all the banjo fittings and seals, particularly on the heat exchanger on the back side of the engine ECU. Also the heat exchanger has been known to leak over time.

If this machine has a lot of hours or has had poor quality fuel used in it then I would say injectors.

had a 220e that was getting hard as hell to start they ended up changing all 6 injectors and that fixed it... pretty freaking dumb really.... id be tempted to see if you can send them in for testing they are like 600-700 each if i remember correctly.

been there done that, sent injesctors and all test good. So we keept in mind it was not the issue. We try bunch of things and spend lot of money on that cases, finaly end it was injectors...
