We bought a walk behind single drum roller with a vibrator feature and a 14hp gas engine, hydraulic variable speed drive. The purpose is for patching. The idea is to hook it onto the dump truck tailgate and eliminate a trailer for a hauling a roller for small patches.

This would be an improvement from our present operation of using vibration plates.

The Hot Mix Asphalt mix we use is typically 1/2" medium, although sometimes on residential driveways we use 1/2" with xtra fines. Once in a while to do repairs on old parking lots we do patch overlays adhered with tack and use the 3/8" with extra fines so it can be feathered as best as possible.

After we compact the square cut edge (or border) of the patch with the vib plate, we want to use the roller to finish the rest of the patch.

Q1 Should we make the first pass with the vibrator feature turned off and wait a few mins until the surface cools a bit and then on a subsequent pass use the vibrator? Or go at it right away with vibration?

Q2 Any particular variant for your recommendation if there are extra fines?

Here's what we observed:

We have used it once on a patch 8' by 16' . The mix was 1/2" medium, the hot thickness was 3".
Result: The completed patch surface texture was not as "shiny" smooth as other patches done previously where we used the vib plates, but there were no lumps or mumps.
The first pass was w/o vibration and it felt soft and was easily disturbed under the worker's feet after the roller passed over the surface. Then after a few mins, the vibrator was activated at high engine speed and more passes performed.
All passes overlapped the previous by at least 1/3.
Temptation to keep rolling was resisted in order to prevent damage to the patch from excessive rolling.

Thanks in advance!
