When one of your young gun operators gets in a grader and says this thing don’t feel right boss. - and the old veteran of 50+ years of grader Ops runs the machine daily says “naw he don’t know what he’s talking about….” You better look.

It's like shock absorbers on a car; they wear so slowly the everyday driver doesn't notice anything at all but when someone else operates the vehicle, they complain it "bounces" like a basketball. The "old" operator can probably finesse the controls so fast the finished product is unaffected so pays it no mind. New guy doesn't have the seat time and sometimes there just isn't any replacement for this seat time.

Not saying the veteran is correct by any aspect as the example is extreme, but that may only be a single point needing addressed on the machine?

The veteran doesn't ever grease? Not that this failure is caused by inadequate greasing, but how could you grease and not notice this? If you have a grease monkey, he needs to be fired.

No way the regular operator couldn't feel or hear that. At the very least the regular OP is not doing a proper walk around inspection prior to operating.

These Volvos use a spherical bearing insert like a big Heim Joint like the Champions had so once it gets loose it busts the brittle bearing race pieces into bits in short order. This was (Front left pivot) of the articulation. The other side is just barely coming apart. SO we are thinking the other side coming loose made it feel way bad. He's 76 and knows better. Def not getting greased. Not getting inspected. These machines don't see hard use. There's no reason to pound out the joints other than lack of grease. Just don't think he's got that feel anymore. I am questioning a lot of things. Nobody should have to hold a full grown mans hand.

It would appear that there has not been greased and no, the operator is responsible

Spherical bearings break and fracture quick once they get loose but if maintained hold tolerance very well. Lack of attention will do them in quick however.

If the other side is still somewhat tight might make it a little more difficult to notice but even just a walk around, that should stick out like sore thumb.
