1st and 3rd pic is showing the same truck owned by Ben West. BW got 6 CL350. Only 27 were made. 2nd and 4th is the same truck but owner is unknown. It might be an old MB truck. It got a "M" in top of guard. Last pic could be a Husby unit. Maybe other can add some info:)

Hopefully so. My friend is a cutter in BC and sent no info- just a disc full of pics last week in the mail. I was out of State but got it yesterday.

Hayesno1 The CL350 with the "M" is one of Menzies trucks see the Pacific cab. Menzies was the only outfit that had to change the cabs due to breaking up due to severe service. This was always a problem with Mack cabs right back to the 40's. Some of the trucks got P16 cabs and some got the Challanger cabs. Some people confuse the ones with the Challanger cabs as being a Challanger truck. This was a very costly endevor and very labour intensive. MacMillan Bloedel would go to that extreme to keep a fleet running. I think it was around 50,000 dollars to convert each truck. The cabs installed were brand new and had to be altered to fit those trucks. The end result was worth it because it gave these trucks a new life span That is only my observations anyway. Someone else might have upgraded their cab but I have never seen one

Mack CL350 Cab Change Outs

HDX and Hayesno1: Here's a few pictures I took recently of a Mack CL350 with a Pacific cab just out of Holberg. I'm pretty sure it is the same truck as the one in pictures 1 and 2 of Posting #284 and that the cab was changed out in the recent past. Credit M&B with a good idea. I always thought the original Mack cab was the ugliest design ever. The truck looks a lot better with the Pacific cab and, as far as I am concerned, extremely good looking with the Challenger cab. I remember as a young boy living on the prairies seeing an article in the Mack Bulldog magazine about the Menzies Bay trucks and being pretty impressed with them. I'm glad I had the chance to spend 20+ years working in the coastal forest industry and I credit that article for giving me the bug to begin with. HDX, I'm curious about what you have heard about the CL350's as trucks to drive. I've quizzed quite a few of my friends who have driven off highway logging trucks and if any had driven the CL350 it was always ranked #1 by them.

Going to the extreme to keep a fleet running

Here's a few pictures for HDX and Hayesno1 in the spirit of Vancouver Island Logging. I could almost see the island from where these pictures were taken. Kip Brown Trucking in Powell River completely redid a couple of HDX trucks (#'s 9 and 17) and turned out a truck that, as far as I am concerned, made the good looking original truck look even better. I had a good look at these trucks and a lot of thought was put into improving the original design. The cabs were raised, 18 speed manuals and Cummins N14 engines were installed. I was particularly impressed with the way the top rad tanks were modified so the piping for the air to air aftercooler could pass through the tanks as opposed to going in and out the sides of the engine compartment (a poorly thought out solution that has no aesthetic value). You can also see the slick solution they came up with for holding the hoods open (they said the idea came from Kenworth originally).

Most guys that I've talked to that drove the CL350 rated them #1, as well. Of course, all of them drove the trucks after the M&B mods. An exception was and old Finnish guy that drove for ColCel for many years. He told me that ColCel had one as a trials unit, and nobody wanted to drive it. Apparently the transmission was cable shift instead of air or electric, and never seemed to work right. The cab doors would fly open and scare the Hell out of the driver, and it rode so rough that drivers were airing the tires down in an attempt to smooth the ride. The old fellow said the HDX was nice, but the P-16 was better. I think Menzies Bay Div. had many of the same problems, along with a bunch more. Their trucks ended up almost totally different in the end, big changes in the design. I've sat in one of them, and they feel really nice. Great view, roomy cab. It was the Menzies Bay truck with the original cab, modified with Pacific doors. They even have an air operated compensator pin. :)

Thanks for sharing those great pictures. You are right about the blue CL350. Take a close look at left fender at front top. It has a big dent. I have attached 4 pictures of 4 different MB trucks. H436 got the challenger cab.
H443 has a "M" in front guard as the yellow at page 19 but it is not the same truck as H443 i still going strong (in MB color configuration) as a tractor :)

Not many guys know it but M&B's Copper Canyon Division had one of those CL350s also. I think the driver liked it but problem was it was a b*****d in the fleet of HDXs so whenever it broke down it was a pain to get parts for because everything had to come from Menzies Bay- She was finally transfered to Menzies to be with all her sisters. Not too sure of the unit # but can find out. We should really keep track of these trucks if for nothing else but history's sake. They were a part of our logging heritage. Thank You to all that send in pics of them--I just gotta learn how to post pictures LOL

Some Off-Highway Trucks

Taken a few years back, 2004-5. Old Hayes HD's. :D The one truck has an old 1693 Cat, and 5x4. A real classic!

Those trucks were auctioned a few years ago - RB auction. First picture shows Hayes HD serial no. 3778.

2nd picure shows a Hayes HD model 37-56. (serial no. unknown) It got 4640 rears, 12 ft. bunks and 40 tons Hayes trailer. Specs are from RB auction

Any idea if they were gassers or diesels?

A V-12 gas engine in an off highway logging truck?? You must be joking, right? :tong Seriously, the last huge gassers in the BC woods were probably the 1,096 cubic inch Hall-Scott engines in some of the chain drive KW's, late 40's early 50's. They were also in some of the steel spars built on war surplus tank retrievers. A friend of mine worked on one of those, he said it drank an entire 45 gallon drum of gas in 15 miles. Nobody could afford that! Also, they say the backfire when it started was so bad, anyone standing near the exhaust could have been killed.
