I know the subject of the pivot bushing (ball joint) for VPAT Blades has come up before. There is a rework procedure just out that includes a different housing and bearing. The old housing is removed from the blade and the new one welded into place. This procedure is applicable to the following machines: -

D5M (S/N: 6GN1-UP; 3CR1-UP; 3DR1-UP; 7LR1-UP; 4JS1-UP; 5ES1-UP; 5FS1-UP; 6AS1-UP)
D5N PS LGP FTC (S/N: AKD1-UP)
D5N PS XL FTC (S/N: AGG1-UP; CFH1-UP)
D5N PS LGP FTC (S/N: CKT1-UP)
D6K LGP (S/N: DHA1-UP)
D6K (S/N: NCF1-UP)
D6K XL (S/N: HMG1-UP; FBH1-UP)

Ask your dealer for REHS8551 if you're having problems and want to upgrade.

Nige , I had a D5MXL s/n 6GN1291 , My local dealer had a service deal on it . The big clip would load up under pressure and collapse come out of the housing. They removed the blade and made a retainer for it at no cost to me. How could this get past r&d and make it from the M series to the K series? I have a 416 C as well , the tractor portion is great , the loader is ok a little slow , the boom is fine but putting the pins directly in the swing tower with no bushing to me is a big no no. The boom lock has never correctly worked either. I would expect more from Cat.

Nige, I have a D5MXL sn 6gno. Does Cat have an update on the bearing assembly for my machine? I ask because I am about to have to replace mine and do not want to have to do this again in another 2000 hours. I have around 4200 hours on it and this is the second time this has been done although the first by me. It had been replaced when I got the machine last year although I don't know how long it has been since the work was done the first time.

Yessiree Bob. All D5M machines of Serial Number Prefix 6GN can be modified using the new parts. The document reference in the OP can be used to make the modification. It also lists the parts required. If you want a copy then PM me with your e-mail address, alternatively ask your Cat dealer to print you a copy - it's only 5 pages.
