    The machine is a 1976 Cat 980B. This machine was purchased new in 1976 and has not been altered in any way, shape or form since it was purchased. All warning indicators, alarms, lap belts, lights, operator manual and any other safety feature that originally came with the machine are in place...

    Almost new Caterpillar D8K

    The owner of one of my side jobs picked up this D8K for $40,000.00 last year. The only thing he had to do was re-pack all of the hydraulic cylinders since it had been sitting for so long. He also installed air conditioning. At the time of purchase the machine had less than 950 hrs.

    Other than the obvious, can anyone tell me whats wrong with this picture? As you can see, the piece that failed is attached to a brake pad. When the threaded piece failed, the brake pad failed to do its job. So take a close look. Can anyone spot what to me is an obvious design flaw?

    On the way to the Riverside yard today, I came across this TS24B spread. These machines had all been re powered with Series 60 Detroit's and as you can tell, they were in excellent shape. Somebody has obviously spent a small fortune keeping these machines up. :cool:

    Machine.... Caterpillar D9T. Total miles (f+r).... around 8111 miles. Total gallons of fuel consumed... 48,409 gallons. MPG...... .17 or about 1/8 of a mile per gallon! :eek: Would this qualify me in the fuel guzzler category? :cool:
