Excavator Backlash

I have severe side to side lash on my IHI 17NE. Its hard to do jobs close to a house or other important things. What would cause this? How do I fix this? I have about 18" or more side to side lash at the bucket. When I let off from rotating, it just stops instantly and slops back and forth. no slow down. When the machine isn't running, I can rotate the machine back and forth a lot. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Loose swing motor and/or worn out/broken gears.

Saw your post in the other thread, there are a few things that will cause this... swing motor issues inside the gear box... swing motor coming loose... worn out pinion on swing box... you will probably have to do a bit of investigating tto see where the problem is coming from. there should be a cover to give you acces to the main ring gear, that would be my first step.

So, after I locate the the swing motor, do I unhook it and take it out? Obviously after looking around it to see if anything looks suspicious. How do I check the pinion and gears? btw, thanks for the amazingly quick responses!

Pick bucket off the ground ,shut off engine ,get out of machine and push on bucket to see how play you have . This is most likely caused from wear between swing pinion gear and house ring gear. Don’t know if there is any adjustment
There should be a cover you can move between tracks to see ring pinion gears

Looking at pics of your machine the swing access could be under the operators seat...or to one side of it. looks to be a pretty small ring gear/rotec, I haven't worked on one of those IHI 17NE's specifically but should be easy enough for you to wrench on it. If you have a dealer around it might be prudent to check on what they want for a repair manual or at least a parts manual so you can see how parts fit and where they are...

Hey guys, Im just now getting the time to take a look around my machine. I started looking for loose bolts, but so far haven't found any. What I did find was a couple things: 1. Most all of my pins and bushings need replaced. 2. There is a piece that is located on the carriage that has a slot in it, and a pin from the, I'm guessing the swing motor, stick into the slot. I looked the part up and it seems to be call a stay. Part number " IHI-42644000 ". It looks like there is a bigger than need be gap between the slot and the pin. Not sure if you have ever ran into this, but it is a replaceable part. I think with that, and the slop in my boom from the pins and bushings, thats where my trouble is coming from. Any thoughts? am I just needing to fix my boom first? Thank guys! p.s. ...the part I am referring to is part number 14. its labeled as "stay"

That is your turning joint. It's ok for that to wiggle a bit. That is located in center of machine.
Your swingbox will be bolted firmly to a flat surface. Should have 3 maybe 4 hoses going to it

Ok. Everything else seems to be solid except for all the slop in the boom. I'm guessing that is my biggest problem. Thanks again guys!

Have you done what Bls suggested? With the bucket in the air, maybe a foot or 2 everything shut off. Can you swing the house on the carriage? Maybe even do this armed out all the way for more leverage. If your house is solid, then yeah it's all linkage after that.
Being a compact, do you have the backhoe articulation where you can swing boom independent of the house? Perhaps you have a bit of internal leakage in that cylinder. Then after that, its pins and bushings all the way. Good luck
