Was checking the wiring schematic for your dash 8 machine and it is a positive disconnect on it. If you had a undercharged battery in it before it was used it could be difficult to charge on machine.
If the 12-24 Volt connector on the batteries has anything going on inside the cable you will end up with a discharged battery. Two recording meters hooked up on one battery each at a time at start up will tell all, as each one has to carry its fair share of the load. Better to test more before throwing parts at it.
