Wanna swap a 5.9 Cummins or John Deere in place of 3208 Cat

What kind of trouble would be involved in swapping out a 3208 Cat in a Bomag compactor for a 5.9 Cummins or a 466 John Deere? There is definitely room in there, but unsure about the bell housing compatibility. We have nothing but trouble out of this junk V8 Cat. Broke a crank in one, replaced it about a year ago with another 3208 and now have water in the oil. No more 3208's ever. Had hell with them in fertilizer trucks too. I'll get it changed or scrap the compactor.

What about swapping it for a Deutz? That is what our Bomag compactor has and it works great.

Yeah, I'd think they'd be pretty expensive to source. What HP are you talking? This will need to be about 185 HP.

Our Bomag 772RB-2 has a Deutz TCD 2015V06 engine with 449 HP. This thing will run circles around a Cat 826H. In Texas Stewart & Stevenson will have the engine or can get it.

Yeah, but I'd think it'd be a lot more expensive than putting a 5.9 or 466 JD in it that I have available. This thing has some age on it and I don't want to spend more on it than it's worth.

I know nothing about a bomag but have swapped engines before in other things, my best advice is find out if anyone else has done it and go see theirs, otherwise, you need to do a lot of homework first, you need bell housings to match up, clutch's, drives, and motor mounts, radiators, alternators, and wiring. If your not up on these, dry up the water that the current 3208 is making and trade it off for something better, a 5.9 cummins is only 360 cubic inches way smaller than a 466, you might consider a 8.3 cummins instead. If you can find someone who's done all the work for you and you can just basically copy it, that will save a lot of headaches and expense thats unseen at the moment. Is the engine direct mounted to the transmission or whatever, or is it self contained and have driveshafts that transmit the power? Is there a clutch involved or is it direct drive off the flywheel?

It's direct mounted to the transmission which is hydrostatic. All that other stuff is nothing major, except for the bell housing which I guess is what I'm mainly asking about. Is it SAE on the Cat versus the Cummins versus the JD? Are they all different?

I think the HP on both the JD and the Cummins are about the same and will do what I want. Either will outdo this 3208 in torque or fuel economy or longevity.

Yes, I have a 3306 but I don't want to waste it in this application.

I have a 5.9 Cummins already, thanks.

Can you get us the model and serial number off of the compactor, and the serial number and arrangement number off of the current engine? With that information I will check and see what I can come up with to help you out on this problem. Also photos of the compactor engine compartment, engine, and hydrostat pumps will always be beneficial in figuring something like this out!

Is there a clutch on the current engine? Is the hydro pump direct mounted to the flywheel via a splined shaft and drive plate on the flywheel? is the hydro pump splined shaft driven direct mounted to a drive plate or is there some clutch and shaft driven off the engine back into the hydro pump. Not sure if this makes any sense, but the big question is whats in the bell housing on the cat now and how is the hydro pump driven? Bell housings can or may not be the same, its just what it takes to mount the engine and its flywheel and if there's a clutch on the engine and mate it to the transmission and bolt that up and get the hydro pump drives to mate up as well.

The 3306 you already have, what bell housing is on it now? Did this application ever have a 3306 in it ever from the factory, if not what other engines were put in it, reason I"m asking is time and money factor, if there was a 3306 ever put in it, you can access all these numbers of housing and drive plates, clutches, everything from either bomag or cat, it'll save a lot of headaches. I understand why you want to switch engines, but look to where someone has already done the work for you, even if it'll cost you a higher dollar engine, you'll save it in the long run.

I mated a IH 466 to a hydraulic pump and ended up with an off the shelf bell housing a number two truck housing if I recall, but I had an adapter plate custom made to mount the pump and also a custom made adapter plate on the flywheel to mount an off the shelf spline drive to so the lengths were the same so they could mount up, its been so long ago I can't remember what was different from the custom made plates to what was available that I could buy, but it wasn't much, but what we needed to do to get the job done, but spent a lot of time and plenty of money to figure it all out, thats why if possible ask to find out if anyone has done this before and how they did it, it took me almost a year to finally get it right on that project, after plenty of experimentation and errors first.

I'll get some pictures when I get back home. We're supposed to get rained out tonight for the next couple of days. Should be able to get some on Wednesday or Thursday.

3208

swapping any engines is a tough job. I just changed a cummins big cam, in one of my trucks and put another big cam in it and there was one year difference in the engines. The coolant fan wouldnt bolt up on the engine and I spent a week figuring out how to make it work. Lots of headaches and expense, in swapping engines, those bellhousings are something else also, sometimes its just a little difference that drives you crazy. Motor mounts, HUMMM you are going from a V engine to and inline engine, so Im pretty sure, nothing will be the same.
Radiator and shroud, another big issue, does your old engine have high flow or low flow radiator (big hoses or little hoses) what does the new engine have??? these issues will drive you nuts and work hard on you check book.
I never would put another 3208 back in, they just wont hold up and some people has had good experience. If I did, put another 3208, I would buy a reman with warranty, because you will need the warranty, I dont think you will find a good used 3208 to swap out, so a reman with warranty maybe the best way to go. Check with Cat and always check the warranty, from anyone
Im trying to remember, but Im thinking the 3208 was like a 2800-3000 rpm engine and most engines now are around 2400 rpm, this make a difference, on your output power from the hydraulic pumps (I think)
Good Luck

I can handle the differences, there won't be another 3208 in it I can guarantee that even if I have to change a lot of the other stuff. If it's too much expense, I'll scrap the compactor altogether and get one with a leaking Detroit at least. They run good anyway and will stay together.

I got rained out today, so I'll look at it tomorrow.

Got a big rain last night, 4 inches.

Heres the pics. I forgot this has a powershift, not a hydro. Looked at it today. Bell housing is pretty clean but the length of the engine is shorter than I remembered. There's really nothing driven off the flywheel except the torque divider it seems to me.

Equipment mechanic for a small company.
looks like it already has a sae adapter ring fron one size to another. I did a swap from an8.2 detroit which is worse than a 3208, in an airplane tow tractor, cummins has any flywheel to hook to the torque, a 5.9 is 5 inches longer than thhe 8.2, I think th cat is real close as they used them in pushbacks also.
I moved the radiator as that was an option and didnt have to do driveline work, it wont be that hard. If I was closer Id come help out it would be fun

If it's a Bomag K300 I've had them with both 3208's and 555 Cummins. Not sure if that Cummins is an improvement or a 3208 tho.

The triple nickel 555 Cummins is a completely different animal from the 5.9. The 5.9 is extremely durable, available in many more hp configurations, parts are inexpensive, readily available,in production and will be for a longtime and it is a re-sleevable block, which the 3208 CAT is not.The 5.9 is definately the way to go in my opinion.
